Soko's 284 Rushing Yards Pushes Football Past Hope

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College football team picked up a 28-21 victory over the Hope College Flying Dutch on Saturday afternoon in the schools' first-ever meeting. Junior running back Alphonso Soko led the Kohawk offense in the game, rushing for 284 yards and one touchdown which came on a 74-yard run in the first quarter. The Coe defense chipped in with an impressive performance, holding Hope to just 97 yards rushing on 39 attempts while picking up four sacks and one pick-six from Anthony Bullard late in the second quarter. With the win, Coe improves to 2-0 on the season while Hope drops to 1-1.

Soko's 284 yards are seventh all-time and the most in a single game since Tino Green rushed for 245 against Buena Vista in 2017. Sophomore receiver Amel Saric scored twice in the contest, moving his total to three on the year while adding 64 yards on four catches. Quarterback Carter Maske was 18-of-31 of the day, tossing for two scores while throwing his first pick of the season. Trey Holub led the defense with nine total tackles including seven solo stops while Heath Henderson also had seven solo tackles. Overall, the defense had eight tackles for loss and four sacks. Cam Elam played his first game of the season and recorded two sacks and four total tackles as Cedric Nah and Alex Aitchison added one sack each. Punter Evan Ellis had a solid day for the Kohawks, recording four punts with an average of 39 yards while having two downed inside the 20.

COE 28 - HOPE 21
GAME FACTS
  • Both offenses started the game cold, trading empty possessions in the opening five drives of the game. The Kohawk defense managed to come up with an important interception just outside the red zone to end a Flying Dutch drive and give the ball back to the offense.
  • The offense struck just three plays later as Soko broke through the Hope defense for a 74-yard score as he registered his third TD of the year.
  • Hope responded back on the next drive, using a 16-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game on a six-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Leak from Brown.
  • The Kohawks failed to answer the Flying Dutch score on their next possession, going three-and-out and punting the ball back to the opposition.
  • Hope put together another impressive scoring drive, using two 17-yard passing plays to move down into a goal-to-go situation where Brown found Ian Rampersad for a five-yard score.
  • The Coe offense answered the call on its next opportunity as Maske and Soko manufactured a TD drive. The Muscatine High product started the drive with an impressive 29-yard burst before Maske hooked up with Joshua Bishop and Dominic Shepardson to move into scoring territory. In the red zone, Maske connected with Saric from 16-yards out as Coe tied the score at 14.
  • Hope had a positive start to its next drive, moving the ball in Coe territory but a first-down sack by Aitchison and Elam presented the Flying Dutch with a second-and-long. Brown's second-down pass was picked by Bullard who jumped in front of the target's route and took the pick to the house giving Coe a 21-14 lead at the break.
  • There were four empty possessions to start the second half but the Kohawks struck on their third drive of the period. Soko again kick-started the drive with a 26-yard run on second down before Maske and Saric hooked up for back-to-back plays including the pair's second TD of the day.
  • Hope cut into the deficit early in the fourth quarter, marching 65 yards over eight plays while capping it off with a 10-yard TD run.
  • On the ensuing possession, the Kohawks drove into the red zone but the Flying Dutch defense came up with a big stop on fourth-and-two, stopping Soko short to get the offense another chance.
  • The Flying Dutch drive, which started at their own 15, advanced all the way to the Coe 43 but back-to-back pass breakups from Manny Lopez and Bullard brought up a decisive fourth down. Nah and Aitchison came up huge on fourth down, recording a nine-yard sack to end any hope for the Flying Dutch.
Up next: The Kohawks return to Clark Field next Saturday for their American Rivers Conference opener against Simpson College at 1 p.m.
