Men’s Soccer Falls to Illinois College on Friday Evening

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team fell to Illinois College 1-0 on Friday evening at Clark Field. The Kohawks started the game well, earning the opening corner kick but the Blue Boys scored the match's only game in the 19th minute. Coe continued to battle for the second half, creating a few solid scoring opportunities but the Blue Boy backline stood tall amongst the challenges. The loss drops the Kohawks to 1-5-1 on the year while the Blue Boys improve to 3-2 overall.

Match Facts:
  • Coe started the game well, earning a corner kick in the second minute but Illinois College defended the early set-piece to keep the match scoreless.
  • The Blue Boys then put together a strong spell, earning a corner while registering three shots before the 12th minute. 
  • Illinois College took advantage of their possession, scoring the opening goal in the 19th minute as Chris Jean-Louis played a long ball to the feet of Toby Ybarra who maneuvered through the Coe defense and fired a shot into the bottom left corner. 
  • Coe immediately responded, regaining control of the match for a handful of minutes but it was unable to create a scoring chance. In the 29th minute, the Kohawks had a flurry of chances from Alex White and Brandon Larner but the pair saw their shots blocked by the Blue Boy defense. 
  • Jay Ndayisenga had the Kohawks first shot on goal just a minute later but his attempt was saved by the Illinois College keeper as the Kohawks continued to trail. The game lost its flow for the final 15-minutes of the half as both teams began to make substitutions before the halftime whistle.
  • The Kohawks started the second half well, creating a great scoring chance for Noah Abideen but the striker had his shot saved by Owen Macias, the Blue Boy keeper. Coe continued to pressure Illinois College for the remainder of the match but the defensive line proved impenetrable for the Kohawk attackers. 
 
Up next: The squad will be back in action on Thursday, September 23 when it travels to Viterbo University for a non-conference matchup at 2:00 p.m.
