Central Gets Past Women’s Basketball on Saturday Afternoon

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fell 67-53 to Central College on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena. Central outscored Coe 22-12 in the opening quarter to take an early lead as the Dutch shot 56 percent in the first period. The Dutch continued to click on offense for the remainder of the contest, shooting 46 percent overall en route to the victory. The loss, which is Coe's third in a row, drops it to 6-14 overall and 3-8 in the league while Central improves to 3-9 and 1-5 in the A-R-C. 
 
Katie Wilhelmi led Coe with 12 points, shooting 5-of-12 from the floor while being the lone Kohawk to reach double-figures. Elle Walker added nine points for the Kohawks off the bench, hitting two of her four 3-point attempts in 22 minutes of action. Ellie Wisner, Kaalyn Petersen Macey Rogers, Emily Sly and Maya Lindgren all finished with five points in the game while Petersen's nine boards were a team-high.

  • Wilhelmi got Coe on the board first in the game, converting a 3 from the left wing to give the hosts an early lead. Central responded with nine-straight points, getting six from Allison Van Gorp to grab the 9-3 lead with 6:22 left in the period. The Kohawks got another 3 after Van Gorp's third bucket as Walker hit from deep to slice the deficit to three. Central was on top to end the quarter, using a 13-6 spurt over the final five-plus minutes to hold a 22-12 lead after one period.
  • Central and Coe traded blows in the first five minutes of the second quarter, scoring seven points apiece as the Dutch continued to lead by 10. The Kohawks quickly chipped away at the lead over the next minute, scoring five-straight points to draw within seven at 31-24. The Dutch remained calm despite the quick run from the Kohawks, ending the period on a 7-4 run to regain a double-digit lead heading into the half. 
  • The Dutch continued to click on offense after the half, scoring seven of the first 10 points in the half to push the lead to 14-points. The Kohawks clapped back with a 5-1 spurt to stay within reach of the Dutch at 46-36. The visitors took complete control of the game before the end of the third, getting an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 19 points after 30 minutes.
  • Coe battled for the final quarter, pulling within 16 points of the Central lead with seven minutes to play. Despite Coe's efforts, Central handled the pressure and saw out the remaining moments to secure the victory.  
Up next: Coe returns to the court on Wednesday, February 2 when it hits the road for a matchup with Loras College in Dubuque at 5:30 PM.
