Men's Basketball Suffers Defeat to Graceland on Saturday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon, falling 73-63 to Graceland University at Kohawk Arena. The Yellowjackets outscored Coe in both halves of the game and held the hosts to just 25 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Graceland, which took an early lead in the contest, fended off numerous comeback attempts from Coe en route to the victory. TJ Schnurr and Cael Schmitt were Coe's leading scorers in the game, registering 20 and 19 points respectively. The loss drops the Kohawks to 1-1 on the season while Graceland improves to 3-1 overall. 
 
GAME FACTS:
GRACELAND 73 - COE 63
  • Graceland opened the game on top, scoring the game's first five points before a layup from John Steffen got Coe on the board. The visitors continued to click on offense, extending their advantage to eight points at the 15:58 mark. The game went quiet over the next few minutes as both teams struggled on offense but Graceland still led 21-14 with 8:42 left in the half. 
  • Coe began its comeback attempt with just over eight minutes remaining, clawing its way within three points after buckets from Max Lampe and TJ Schnurr. The Yellowjackets answered with a strong run to close the half, pushing their lead back to eight with a period-ending 4-0 run. 
  • Coe closed the gap to start the second, getting within four points of Graceland's lead after a pair of scores from Lampe and Schnurr. The Kohawks continued to claw back and took their first lead of the game at the 14:07 mark, getting a 3-point basket from Cael Schmitt to grab a 45-44 lead. 
  • Graceland answered the call, regaining the lead during the next few minutes thanks to an 8-2 run which put it ahead 52-47. The teams then went back and forth for a long stretch of the contest but the visitors maintained a narrow 56-53 lead at the 8:16 mark. Coe continued to pressure Graceland but Coach Martin's team could only get within three points as the Yellowjackets pulled out the 73-63 victory.  
Up next: Coe is back in action next on Wednesday evening, taking on Monmouth College at 7:30 PM at Glennie Gymnasium.
