Balanced Scoring, Strong Second Half Leads Men’s Basketball to Win in First Road Test

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Coe College men's basketball team bounced back for an important win in its first road game of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday evening, taking down Monmouth College 75-57 at Glennie Gym. The Kohawks and Fighting Scots were neck-and-neck in the opening period, trading small runs with one another while neither team truly gained control. Coe used a strong start to the second half, outscoring Monmouth by six in the opening seven-plus minutes. The Kohawks built upon the momentum down the stretch of the second half and grew their advantage to double-digits with just over eight minutes to play. Coe saw out the remainder of the contest, continuing to pad its lead over the final few moments en route to the victory. The Kohawk offense featured five double-digit scorers and was led by Max Lampe, who scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Cael Schmitt and TJ Schnurr added 18 and 17 points each, chipping in to balance out the offensive attack. The win moves Coe to 2-1 on the year while Monmouth falls to 2-2 overall.

GAME FACTS:
COE 79 - MONMOUTH 57
  • The hosts started well, scoring on their opening possession while capitalizing on a Coe turnover and an offensive board to go up 5-0. Coe responded immediately, ripping off 10 unanswered points in the next 3:08 to gain a 10-5 advantage. The Fighting Scots got back in front with a run of its own during the next three minutes, using a 9-5 spurt to grab a 15-14 lead. The teams then went back and forth for the final 10 minutes of the period but a pair of free throws from Schnurr gave Coe a 29-28 lead at the break.
  • Lampe opened the scoring in the second half and was later joined by John Steffen, who gave Coe a six-point lead on an old-fashioned 3-point play. Monmouth continued to stay tough despite the quick run, outscoring Coe 7-2 during the next 1:17 to make it 36-35. The Kohawks slightly edged the Fighting Scots during the next few minutes, using a 9-6 run to expand its lead to four points with just over 15 minutes remaining.
  • The visitors put their foot on the gas at the 12:49 mark of the half, ripping off a 12-5 run to grab a nine-point lead with 9:09 remaining. The lead continued to grow for Coe, which used another 8-1 spurt to extend the advantage to 16 points with just over five minutes left. The Kohawks put the game out of reach down the stretch, scoring 10 straight points to push their lead past 20 and put the hosts in the rearview mirror.

Up next: Coe returns to the floor this weekend for another non-conference road matchup, taking on Ripon on Saturday at 3 PM.
