#21 Volleyball Defeats Buena Vista in A-R-C Tournament Championship, Completes Perfect Run Through League Play

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The #21 and top-seeded Coe College Volleyball team completed a perfect run through the American Rivers Conference on Saturday evening, taking down the third-seed Buena Vista 3-1 at Kohawk Arena to claim the American Rivers Conference Postseason Championship. Coe, which earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, hit .250 in the game and racked up 50 total kills while forcing the Beavers into 32 attacking errors. The Kohawks claimed a 28-18 win in set one but saw the Beavers answer with a 25-22 decision in the second frame. Coe then put together a pair of dominant efforts in the third and fourth sets, securing the conference championship with 25-14 and 25-12 victories. Five players recorded eight-plus kills for Coe as senior Kate Tidman led the team with 14 kills and a .235 attack percentage. Grace Lueken also reached double-digit kills, posting 11 kills in just 18 attempts to post a .556 hitting percentage. The win moves the Kohawks to 27-5 overall while Buena Vista ends its season with a 13-12 mark.

  • The Kohawks fell behind quickly in the first set, spotting the Beavers a 4-2 lead in the opening frame. Coe battled back over the next few minutes, ripping off an 8-4 spurt to gain a 10-8 lead. The Kohawks and Beavers went back-and-forth during the next few rallies but again Coe got a small spurt to take control with a 20-17 lead. The Beavers tried to stop Coe's momentum with a timeout but the hosts stayed hot and scored five of the final six points to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • Buena Vista responded in the second set, posting a .294 attack percentage after hitting just .024 in the opener. The Beavers and Kohawks traded points early but Buena Vista scored three straight to grab a 13-10 lead. Coe battled back after a timeout, using an 8-4 run to regain a one-point advantage. The visitors continued to click down the stretch, outscoring Coe 7-4 over the final few points to knot the match at 1-1. 
  • The Kohawks and Beavers went point for point early on with Coe grabbing a narrow 7-6 lead. The hosts then used a 4-1 run to take control of the frame and forced the Beavers into a timeout. Coe's lead kept growing following the break with the Kohawks stretching it to eight points at 16-8. The Beavers used their final timeout but it proved not enough as Coe outscored Buena Vista 9-6 down the stretch to grab a 2-1 lead in the match. 
  • Coe was on top in the fourth and final period, registering 14 kills in the frame while forcing 10 attacking errors from BVU. Coe jumped ahead quickly 6-2 and forced the visitors into a timeout but the lead continued to grow following the break as the top seed extended its advantage to 16-9. The Beavers tried to put a halt to the Kohawk momentum with another timeout but the hosts scored nine of the final 12 points en route to a 25-12 victory and 3-1 victory.
