Balanced Scoring & Strong Defense Leads Men’s Basketball to Fourth-Straight Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Coe College men's basketball team picked up its fourth-straight win on Thursday, defeating Olivet College 74-56 in its opening game of the Music City Classic at Welch College. The Kohawks had 12 players record a point in the win including nine players who registered at least five points. On defense, Coe held Olivet to 30.1 percent shooting and 27.6 percent from behind the arc while forcing the opposition into 12 turnovers. The Kohawks shook off a rough start to the game and erased a quick six-point lead, dominating the opening half for a 36-27 advantage. Coe continued to control the game in the second half, extending its lead to 21 points before the 10-minute mark. Coach Martin's team kept clicking over the final few minutes of the contest, maintaining a comfortable lead en route to the victory. Cael Schmitt led the Coe offense, scoring 17 points to lead the game while TJ Schnurr was the other Kohawk to reach double figures with 12 points. Schnurr pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the game while recording his third-straight double-double. The win moves Coe to 7-5 overall while Olivet drops to 3-7 on the season.

GAME FACTS:
COE 74 - OLIVET 56
  • The opponents got off to a solid start, scoring the game's first six points to grab an early lead less than two minutes in. The Kohawks answered with a quick burst, ripping off a 10-3 stretch to take their first lead with 16:03 left in the half. The teams then traded buckets over the next run of the game but Coe held a two-point lead midway through.
  • The Kohawks then took control of the period, ripping off 13 unanswered points over the next four-plus minutes. Olivet, which trailed 32-17, responded with a 10-4 run to close the half, slicing the gap to just nine with 20 minutes gone.
  • Both teams scored in the opening minute of the second half but the game then went quiet for a period of time, with neither scoring until the 16:58 mark of the frame. Again the teams traded blows but Coe took control for good at the 15-minute mark, outscoring Olivet 13-2 during the next four minutes. The Comets stayed tough over the final 10 minutes of the contest, cutting the deficit to under 20 with over eight minutes to play but the Kohawk offense proved too efficient to handle.

Up next: The Kohawks will complete the Music City Invitational tomorrow afternoon with another non-conference matchup, taking on #17 Johns Hopkins at 4:30 PM.
