NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Coe College men's basketball team suffered a last-minute defeat to #17 Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon, falling 78-77 in the team's second game of the Music City Classic. Coe, which saw its five-game winning streak snapped, trailed by nine points at the break after the Bluejays hit seven 3s in the opening 20 minutes. The Kohawks stormed back in the second half, led by
Cael Schmitt and
TJ Schnurr who scored 17 and 12 in the final 20. The pair led Coe to a late four-point lead with less than two minutes to play but Johns Hopkins scored the final five points of the game to hang on for the victory. Schmitt finished with a team-high 25 points, tying his season-best while adding four assists and two steals. Schnurr had 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting and grabbed six rebounds to finish second on the squad. The loss drops Coe to 7-6 on the season while Johns Hopkins improves to 8-2 overall.

- Schnurr opened the game for the Kohawks with a 3 less than a minute in, starting a back-and-forth run between the teams. Johns Hopkins began a run around the 16 minute-mark, outscoring Coe 9-2 during a four-minute stretch. Coe slowly cut into the lead with 12 minutes left in the period, closing the gap to three at 20-17 with 8:18 to play in the first.
- The Kohawks continued to claw back over the next few minutes, getting a jumper from Bennett Sherry and a 3 from Greg Hall who tied the game at 22 with 5:39 on the clock. The Bluejays answered the call with back-to-back 3s, quickly restoring a six-point lead with just over four minutes left in the first. The game then went quiet until the two-minute mark but Johns Hopkins edged Coe 11-8 to close the period, taking a 39-30 lead into the half.
- Brady Klahn cut the lead to seven on Coe's first possession of the second but Hopkins immediately responded, scoring six-straight to take a 13-point lead. The Kohawks then traded buckets with the Bluejays for the next few minutes, scoring on offense but failing to come up with the needed stops.
- Coe then started its next charge with just under 13 minutes to play, getting a 3 from Schmitt to slice the deficit to nine at 60-51. The Kohawks then got a five-point run from Schnurr a few minutes later, scoring a pair of layups to make it 65-60. The squads then traded blows for the next few minutes but the Bluejays managed to maintain a two or three possession lead throughout. The Kohawks continued to come back with under five minutes to play, scoring seven unanswered points to take a 77-73 lead with 1:43 to play. Johns Hopkins then hit two free throws to cut the deficit to two and later hit a crucial 3 to take the lead for good.
