DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team secured a comprehensive 88-67 victory at Dubuque on Wednesday evening in the squad's first game of the New Year. Coe led for all but four minutes in the game and shot a season-best 62.7 percent from the field en route to the victory. The Kohawks opened the game with a strong first half, withstanding an early charge from the hosts to hold a double-digit lead after 20 minutes. UD sliced the deficit to single digits early in the second half but Coe used a dominant 22-9 run before the midway mark of the period to put the game out of reach. The Kohawks were led by
Cael Schmitt and
Greg Hall who scored 22 and 20 points respectively. Schmitt, who was 7-of-14 from the floor, added six assists and three rebounds in a team-high 35 minutes. Hall was 3-of-6 from deep and 8-of-12 from the floor, adding four board and two assists to his new career-high point total.
TJ Schnurr finished one rebound shy of his fourth double-double of the year, registering 15 points and nine boards in 34 minutes. Freshman guard
Cooper Nailor made an impact from the bench, scoring a season-high 11 points including three 3s in 13 minutes. The win moves Coe to 8-6 on the season and 2-3 in the A-R-C while Dubuque drops to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

COE 88 - DUBUQUE 67
- Dubuque started the first half on fire, getting an early 8-2 run in the first 2:25. The run featured a trio of layups and a dunk while Coe's lone basket came from Hall on a jumper. Coe then responded during the next three minutes, outscoring Dubuque 12-3 to flip the script and grab a 14-11 lead. Schnurr and Hall combined for all 12 points during the span, with Hall scoring the first five and Schnurr the final seven. The teams then traded blows over the next few minutes but a slight UD advantage pulled the hosts within two midway through the half.
- Nailor then kickstarted the next run for Coe, hitting a 3 with 10:06 left in the period which was the onset of a 15-6 run for the visitors. The Kohawks were 6-of-9 during the run, getting a pair of 3s while holding UD to just 2-of-8 shooting. Dubuque momentarily stopped to run with a quick 6-3 run but again Coe responded, scoring seven unanswered points to regain a 15-point lead. The hosts ended the period with five of the final seven points, getting a layup and a 3 from Trent DeVries to make it 48-36 at the break.
- UD continued to claw back in the first minute of the second, scoring the first five points to pull within seven points. The teams then settled in, trading buckets over the next few possessions before Coe put its foot on the gas. The Kohawks then ripped off a 10-0 spurt during the next four minutes, getting five points from Schmitt and a long-distance jumper from Hall. Coe continued to click on offense for the final 10 minutes of the game, scoring at will while holding Dubuque under wraps down the stretch.
