Men’s Basketball Scores Season-High 97 Points in Resounding Win over Buena Vista

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team posted a new season-high in points with a 97-64 victory over Buena Vista at Kohawk Arena on Saturday evening. Coe dominated the game from the initial whistle, holding Buena Vista scoreless for the opening seven minutes of the game while building a large lead. The Kohawks scored 49 points in the first half, shooting 57.6 percent from the floor and brought the defensive intensity, holding the Beavers to only 25.8 percent shooting. The hosts maintained their comfortable lead for the final 20 minutes of action, converting at will on offense while forcing the Beavers into a variety of difficult possessions. TJ Schnurr led the offnese, scoring a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc. Cael Schmitt also reached double digits, scoring 14 points while adding six assists, three steals and a pair of rebounds. John Steffen had a career game in his first start since December 3, stuffing the stat sheet with 12 points, eight boards, five assists and four steals. Max Lampe was the final Kohawk in double figures, finishing with 11 points two rebounds, two blocks and one assists in just 13 minutes of action. With the win, Coe moves to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the A-R-C and Buena Vista drops to 7-7 and 1-5 in the league. 
 
GAME FACTS:
COE 97 - BVU 64
  • The Kohawks were clicking on all cylinders to start the game, scoring the first nine points before an early timeout from the visitors. Not much changed following the pause, as Coe scored nine more unanswered points over the next three minutes to go ahead 18-0. Buena Vista finally got off the schneid at the 12:11 mark, hitting a 3 to open the scoring. The hosts started to claw back over the next couple of possessions, getting a 5-1 run to slice the deficit to 13 points midway through the first. 
  • Coe regained momentum with just under 10 minutes left in the first, getting a jumper from Greg Hall which kick started another big run. The Kohawks outscored the Beavers 14-4 during the next 4:27, getting four points from Hall and Steffen along the way. Coach Martin's team, which led 37-12, ended the half on another dominant stretch, ripping off a 12-6 run before the end of the period to hold a 49-18 lead at the break. 
  • BVU showed signs of life early in the second half, outscoring the hosts 9-6 thanks to a 3 and a trio of two-pointers. Coe answered, getting a quick 6-2 spurt across the next 1:16 of game time, restoring a 30-point advantage. The Beavers continued to slowly chip away at the deficit, outscoring the Kohawks 16-11 before the midway point of the half to make the score 72-45. The Kohawks then managed the final 10 minutes of the game, working clock on offense while keeping the Beavers at bay for the remainder of the contest.
