Women’s Basketball Takes Down Buena Vista 62-53 to Complete Season Sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team completed the season sweep over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Beavers 62-53 inside Kohawk Arena. Freshman guard Ellie Wisner scored a career-high 28 points in the victory, shooting 7-of-17 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Coe and Buena Vista battled in the opening half but the Kohawks took a four-point lead into the half after holding the Beavers to less than 34 percent shooting. Coe would then outscore BVU 13-12 and 19-15 in the final two-quarters of play, securing the victory to snap its losing streak. The victory moves Coe to 7-15 overall and 4-9 in the A-R-C while Buena Vista falls to 7-12 and 5-8 in league play. 
 
Wisner was joined in double-figures by Alyse Southard, who finished with 10 points, three steals and two rebounds. The junior guard was 4-of-8 from the floor and hit 2-of-3 long-distance attempts for the Kohawks. Kaalyn Petersen was the leading rebounder for Coe, posting six boards while adding seven points, two blocks and two steals.

  • Petersen got the scoring started in the game, giving Coe an early 2-0 lead with a layup inside. BVU scored four of the next five points to grab its first lead of the game at 4-3 with 7:55 left in the first quarter. Coe took control of the opening quarter over the next minute-plus, scoring eight-straight points to take an 11-4 lead. During the run, Coe got a pair of 3s from Wisner and Southard and another layup from Petersen. The visitors stayed within reaching distance of Coe down the stretch of the first quarter, outscoring the hosts 13-7 to cut the deficit to just one after 10 minutes. 
  • The Kohawks opened the second quarter with a free throw from Petersen and a bucket from Wisner, quickly extending the lead to 21-17 just over two minutes in. BVU owned the next few minutes of action, ripping off a 9-5 run to tie the game at 26. Coe ended the first half with four unanswered points as Maya Lindgren and Wisner hit a pair of free throws to send the Kohawks into the break with a 30-26 lead. 
  • Coe had a strong open to the second half, using an 11-6 run to push its lead to nine points at 41-32. Wisner spearheaded Coe's charge during the run, scoring seven points along the way with seven points. Buena Vista kept itself in the game during the final four minutes of the quarter, scoring six of the eight points in the quarter to make it 43-38 with 10 minutes to play. The squads traded blows to open the final quarter, but Coe edged BVU 11-10 in the first four minutes to maintain its advantage. Coe, which led 56-48 with 4:54 to play, managed the final few minutes of the quarter to secure the victory over the Beavers.
