ORLANDO, Fl. - The Coe College softball team opened its spring break trip with a pair of victories on Sunday, earning a 7-2 win over Southern Maine and an 8-0 decision over a UW-Stout. The Kohawks benefited from a pair of dominant pitching performances from
Hannah Ausenhus and
Abbie White. Ausenhus went all seven innings in the opening game, scattering six hits while surrendering just one earned run en route to the victory. White followed up with an impressive effort against Stout, pitching a one-hit shutout while striking out six batters in six innings. The wins move Coe to 4-4 on the season while Southern Maine and UW-Stout drop to 0-2 and 5-5 respectively.

- Coe immediately got on the board in the top of the first inning, getting two runs on two hits to grab the early lead. Heather Boeckenstedt singled in her first plate appearance of the season and quickly stole second and third. Ruby Kappeler then drew a walk to set the stage for Madi Parson. Parson delivered for Coe, driving in both runners with a single through the left side to give the Kohawks a 2-0 lead.
- Coe struck again in the top of the third after a scoreless second, adding two more runs in the frame. Parson reached on a one-out single before Bree Mangelsen walked. After a fly out, Skyler Stookey tripled to left-center, scoring Parson and Mangelsen to make it 4-0. The Huskies responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring one on an RBI single but Ausenhus got a fly out to limit the damage.
- The Kohawks added two more runs in the top of the fourth, getting an RBI from Boeckenstedt while scoring on a wild pitch. Boeckenstedt's RBI came on a groundout, allowing Nicki Wood to score Coe's fifth run of the contest. Kappeler, who had reached earlier in the inning on a single, came across to score on a wild pitch after stealing second and third.
- The scoring stopped during the next few innings but Coe added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh. Shaylee Dodd doubled to left with two outs and was driven home by Stookey who also doubled in Coe's next at-bat. Ausenhus returned to the circle for the final three outs of the game, getting a leadoff groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to cap off the performance.

- The Kohawks started the scoring early in game two, getting one run in the bottom of the first inning as Parson singled home Kappeler to put Coe in front. The big inning came in the bottom of the third as the Kohawks scored four runs on three hits to take a 5-0 lead. Boeckenstedt reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning and immediately moved to third on a steal and an error.
- Kappeler picked up an RBI for Coe in the next plate appearance, driving home Boeckenstedt with a sacrifice fly. After walks for Parson and Dodd and a single for Mangelsen, Stookey was hit by a pitch, allowing Parson to score. The final two runs of the inning came on a single from Keera Ball, who drove home Dodd and Mangelsen, putting the Kohawks in front 5-0.
- Coe added another run in the bottom of the fourth, as Dodd picked up another RBI on a single that allowed Kappeler to score. White continued to dominate, setting the Blue Devils down in order in the top of the fifth and the sixth to set Coe up with an opportunity to walk it off in the bottom of the sixth. Chloe Severson led off with a single and moved to third after a single from Gabrielle Buckridge and a walk from Racheal Huizenga. Stookey then reached on an error, allowing Severson to score to make it 7-0. The winning run came two batters later as freshman Addie Menke singled home Buckridge for the final tally of the game.
Up next: The Kohawks will be back in action tomorrow for another doubleheader against Macalester College and Defiance College at 9:30 and 11:45 AM CT.
