Baseball Defeats #10 Webster with Three Ninth-Inning Runs

ST. LEO, FL. - The Coe College baseball team bounced back on Thursday with a late come-from-behind victory over 10th-ranked Webster, defeating the Gorloks 7-4 in nine innings at Thomas B. Southard Stadium. The Gorloks took an early 4-0 lead thanks to a four-spot in the third inning but Coe answered with four in the top of the seventh to tie it late. Coe then got three runs in the top of the ninth inning thanks to RBI from Tyce Johnson, Jacob Brosius and Creighton Kreshel, who gave Coe a 7-4 lead. Austin Divello entered to close the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and worked a perfect inning, sitting the Gorloks down in order to secure the victory for the Kohawks. With the win, improves Coe to 4-4 on the season while #10 Webster falls to 7-3 on the season.

Game Facts
  • It was a slow start to the game for both teams as Coe had the game's first base runner in the top of the second but a double play ended any scoring chances.
  • Webster finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs on five hits to grab the lead. The Gorloks got back-to-back hits to start the inning but Coe starting pitcher Alex Timp buckled down and struck out the next batter. Webster continued to threaten, getting a one-out single to load the bases but again Timp paused the threat with a line out to third. The first two runs of the inning came on passed balls, allowing all three runners to advance 90 feet on each pitch. The Gorloks then produced back-to-back hits to add two more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Coe attempted to respond in the following inning, putting a runner on third with two outs but a fly-out kept the Kohawks scoreless through 3 ½. After a 1-2-3 inning for Webster, Coe threatened again, getting bases loaded with three-outs but the Gorloks got a pop out to escape the jam.
  • The Kohawks finally answered in the top of the seventh inning, getting four runs on two hits to tie the game. Creighton Kreshel led the inning off with a single and quickly moved to third as Tyler Elliott reached on an error. James VanHooser then reached on another Gorlok error, allowing Elliott to move to second while loading the bases. Mitchell Eckardt picked up the first RBI of the inning in Coe's next AB, producing a sacrifice fly to drive home Kreshel. The big blow for Coe came two batters later as TJ Johnson smashed a three-run homer to clear the bases and tie the score at four.
  • Coe again loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning, getting singles from Kreshel and VanHooser and a walk from Elliott but a groundout allowed Webster to evade any damage. The Kohawks completed the comeback in the top of the ninth inning, getting three runs on three hits to take the lead for good. TJ Deardorff led the frame off with a double to left before moving to third on a Reid Rausch walk. Tyce Johnson then gave Coe the lead, flying out to right field to pick up an RBI as Deardorff scored from third.
  • Brosius, a freshman from Dubuque, picked up the second RBI of the inning in the next plate appearance, singling to right field as pinch-runner Jordan Joselit scored from second. The final run of the game came from Kreshel as he reached on an error, scoring Brosius who had moved to second and third on a stolen base and error.
Up next: Coe will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 8:30 AM CT.
