ORLANDO, Fl. - The Coe College softball team picked up two more wins on its spring break trip on Thursday, defeating Cortland 4-3 and Ramapo 6-5 in nine innings. The Kohawks secured a walk-off victory in the opening game over the Red Dragons, getting a game-winning hit from
Ruby Kappeler in the bottom of the seventh inning. Coe then won in dramatic fashion in game two, defeating the Roadrunners 6-5 in nine innings.
Heather Boeckenstedt had the game-winning hit in the contest, producing a clutch double to score
Keera Ball on the play. The wins, which are Coe's sixth and seventh consecutive, improve it to 8-4 overall while Cortland and Ramapo drop to 2-5 and 5-1 overall.
COE 4 - CORTLAND 3
Game Facts
- Coe threatened first in the game, putting pressure on the Red Dragons in the bottom of the first as Kappeler doubled with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. The Kohawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run blast from Chloe Severson who drove in Shaylee Dodd to make it 2-0.
- Cortland responded immediately in the top of the third inning, getting two runs on two hits to tie the game. The Red Dragons got a pair of RBI ground outs after loading the bases to start the inning but starting pitcher Abby Stock worked her way out of trouble.
- The Red Dragons took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out single which scored a runner from third. The threat remained as Cortland had runners on first and second but Stock again limited the damage with a fly out.
- The Kohawks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Bree Mangelsen led off with a walk. She advanced to second on a groundout from Dodd before moving up to third on a one-out single from Skyler Stookey. Freshman Addie Menke then tied the game in a pinch-hit appearance, producing a sacrifice fly that allowed Mangelsen to score.
- Just one inning later the Kohawks secured the victory in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Boeckenstedt reached first with one out after being hit by a pitch and quickly stole second to move into scoring position. Kappeler then delivered the biggest hit of the game, singling to left field which allowed the speedy Boeckenstedt to score from second and win the game.
COE 6 - RAMAPO 5 - 9 INNINGS
Game Facts
- Ramapo started well in game two, grabbing an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff homer. Coe immediately responded, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the second inning to take its first lead of the game. Mangelsen and Dodd reached to lead the inning off before Stookey reached on an error that allowed Mangelsen to tie the game. Two batters later Severson gave the Kohawks a lead on a RBI single, scoring Dodd to make it 2-1.
- The Roadrunners answered the Kohawks in the bottom of the second inning, getting a pair of two-out RBI on a single through the left side to regain a 3-2 lead. The game went scoreless during the third and fourth innings but Coe tied the game in the top of the fifth. Natalie Blank made it a 3-3 game, hitting a two-out homer to center field for her second-career homer.
- Coe retook the lead one inning later, getting an RBI double from Menke who drove home Kaitlyn Filter with two outs in the sixth. The Roadrunners refused to go away, getting a game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Kohawks limited the damage to keep it tied at seven. After a scoreless seventh the game went to extras with Coe scoring in the top of the eighth thanks to a fielding error. Ramapo also scored in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule but back-to-back outs for Abbie White ended the inning with it tied at five.
- The Kohawks took the lead and kept it in the top of the ninth inning, getting a one-out single from Nicki Wood to put runners on the corner. Boeckenstedt doubled in the next plate appearance, getting the RBI as Ball scored on the play. White stayed in the game for the final three outs, getting a 1-2-3 inning to leave the runner on third while earning her third win of the season.
Up next: Coe will finish off their Florida games tomorrow with another doubleheader, facing Salve Regina and Rowan at 10:15 AM CT and 12:30 PM CT.
