COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Coe College softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling 7-1 to Linfield while defeating #15 St. John Fisher 4-3. The Kohawks recorded seven hits in the opening game but were unable to take advantage of runners on base with the Wildcats scoring six runs in the top of the third to take control of the contest. Coe responded in game two, racking up 12 hits and four runs while knocking off the nationally-ranked Cardinals. The Kohawks, who secured their first win of the season, move to 1-3 overall while Linfield and St. John Fisher move to 10-1 and 0-4 respectively.

LINFIELD 7 - COE 1
Game Facts
  • Linfield started the scoring early in the first game of the day, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk. The Wildcats blew it open in the top of the third, scoring six runs on five hits. Linfield started with four-straight base-runners in the inning which included a two-RBI double to make it 4-0. The Wildcats added three more before the end of the frame, getting three RBI hits to make it 7-0.
  • Coe loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning with one out but a strikeout and groundout left the runners on base and kept the Kohawks scoreless. Both teams went scoreless during the next three innings until Coe got its first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. The Kohawks got a single from Addie Menke to start the inning and then a single from pinch hitter Sarah Milks. Menke then scored on an RBI single from Madi Parson which gave Coe its only run of the game.
COE 4 - #15 ST. JOHN FISHER 3
Game Facts
  • Both teams went scoreless in the opening inning of game number two. The Kohawk offense came to life in the top of the second, putting up four runs and four hits in the frame to jump ahead early. Ruby Kappeler reached on a walk with one out before stealing second to move into scoring position. Nicki Wood then drove her home with a single-to-center before a single from Chloe Severson put runners on first and second. Shaylee Dodd then singled through the right side, scoring Wood while she and Severson advanced an extra base on an error. Parson then capped off the inning with a two-RBI double through the left side of the infield, as Dodd and Severson came around to make it 4-0.
  • St. John Fisher answered in the home half of the fourth inning, getting two runs on two hits to slice the Coe lead in half. The Cardinals took advantage of a wild pitch in the frame, scoring both of their runs on the errant play. St. John Fisher grabbed another run in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. The Cardinals got an RBI groundout to make it 4-3 before loading the bases again after a walk. Coe's starter Hannah Ausenhus worked her way out of the jam to keep Coe in front, getting a double-play groundout to end the frame.
  • Ausenhus returned to the circle and set the Cardinals down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning to send Coe into the seventh with a 4-3 advantage. The Kohawks threatened to add insurance in the top of the seventh but came up empty. Abby White then entered the game in the bottom of the seventh to close the game out for Coe as the freshman hurler put the Cardinals down 1,2,3 to give the Kohawks the victory.
Up next: Coe completes its participation in the NFCA Leadoff Classic tomorrow morning with another double-header against East Texas Baptist and Pomona-Pitzer at 8 AM and 10 AM CT.
