Softball Closes Out NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday, Ends Tournament with Win over Pomona-Pitzer

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Coe College softball team rounded out its appearance at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday morning, falling 6-5 to fourth-ranked East Texas Baptist before ending the tournament with a 6-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. The Kohawks trailed for the first five innings of the opener but responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2. ETBU then answered with three in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead but a three-run homer from Shaylee Dodd tied the game in the top of the seventh. The Tigers again responded to the Kohawks big inning, getting the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single. 
 
Coe again trailed in game two as Pomona-Pitzer jumped in front 3-0 after three innings. The Kohawks then scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings but one run from the Sagehens in the top of the fifth meant the score was tied after five. Coe secured the victory in the bottom of the seventh inning as Ruby Kappeler drove home Dodd with a single after she reached base earlier in the inning on a single. The results move Coe to 2-4 on the season while ETBU and Pomona-Pitzer move to 12-5 and 6-12 overall.

Game Facts
  • The Tigers got on the board first in the opening game, pushing one run across in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly. Coe threatened the Tigers for the first time in the top of the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second with two outs but the hosts worked themselves out of the jam and kept the Kohawks scoreless. ETBU added to its lead in the home half of the fifth inning, getting a two-out solo homer to double the lead. 
  • The Kohawks immediately answered in the top of the sixth, leading off with back-to-back base runners as Dodd and Kappeler reached to begin the frame. The pair moved to second and third on a productive groundout by Natalie Blank and later came around to score on a two-RBI single from Bree Mangelsen who tied the game at two.
  • The scoring continued in the bottom of the sixth inning as East Texas Baptist scored three runs on four hits to regain the lead. The Tigers led the inning off with a solo homer and got two more runs on a pair of RBI hits. 
  • Coe wouldn't go down without a fight, getting the first two batters on base to lead off the top of the seventh. After a flyout to right field, Dodd came up with the biggest play of the game, hitting a three-run homer to score Kappeler and Blank. The Tigers showed no panic despite the big comeback from Coe, getting a leadoff single to start the bottom of the seventh. After a sacrifice fly moved the runner to second, ETBU got an RBI single which scored the winning run.

Game Facts
  • Pomona-Pitzer quickly got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring a pair of runs on two hits in the opening frame. The Sagehens added another run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single but Hannah Ausenhus worked herself out of some more trouble and limited the damage. 
  • The Kohawks came to life in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits to immediately get back into the game. Blank reached on an error to lead off the inning and came around to score as Coe's next batter Madi Parson smashed a two-run dinger. Pomona-Pitzer had its own response in the top of the fifth, getting back-to-back singles with one out to put pressure on Coe. The Sagehens extended their lead back to two before the end of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch to grab a 4-2 lead. 
  • Coe continued to click on offense in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two more runs in the inning to tie the score at four. Addie Menke led the inning off with a pinch-hit single and then stole second to move into scoring position. Dodd singled in Coe's next AB, driving home Menke who scored from second to make it 4-3. Kappeler reached on a fielder's choice as Coe's next hitter, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She came around to score on another passed ball which resulted in an error by the catcher as Kappeler advanced two bases on the play. The Kohawks put a runner on third with two outs later in the inning but a strikeout got Pomona-Pitzer out of the trouble with the game tied at four. 
  • The game went scoreless for the next inning and a half until the Kohawks won it in the bottom of the seventh. Dodd reached on a single to short with one out in the frame and stole second to move into scoring position. Kappeler then delivered the biggest hit of the contest for Coe, driving home Dodd on an RBI single to secure the walk-off win for the Kohawks. 
Up next: The Kohawks will return to the field on Sunday, March 13 when they kicks-off their 2022 Spring Trip where they will play 10 games.
