CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team picked up its first American Rivers Conference sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Simpson 6-3 in the opener and 10-8 in game two. The Kohawks came from behind in the opening game, scoring six runs in the fifth inning including a three-run homer from
Madi Parson. In game two, Coe jumped ahead early with a 4-1 lead after two innings and later added six in the bottom of the fourth. Coe hung on for the sweep despite allowing five runs in game two as
Abby Stock recorded the final two outs of the game for her second save of the day. The sweep moves Coe to 16-8 overall and 5-3 in the league while Simpson drops to 17-12 and 2-6 in the A-R-C.
GAME ONE
COE 6 - SIMPSON 3
Game Facts
- Both teams went scoreless in the opening frame but the visitors grabbed a run in the top of the second inning. The Storm got a lead-off homer to start the inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead but freshman pitcher Abbie White buckled down and recorded three-straight outs to avoid further damage.
- Simpson struck again in the fourth after an empty third, adding a pair of runs to extend its lead to 3-0. The Storm got a one-out single to put pressure on White and later got back-to-back RBI hits with two down to pad their lead.
- The Kohawks finally sprung to life in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits and a pair of Storm errors. The hosts loaded the bases to begin the inning, reaching on an error and back-to-back walks. Addie Menke picked up the first RBI for Coe, grounding out to first to slice the deficit to two. On the play, pinch-runner Maya Lindgren scampered home after an error by the Simpson catcher, cutting Simpson's lead to just one. Coe tied the game in its next at-bat as Heather Boeckenstedt picked up an RBI single, allowing pinch-runner Sarah Milks to score. Natalie Blank walked in the next at-bat to join Boeckesntedt before the pair moved up a base on a wild pitch. Madi Parson then delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit, smashing a three-run home run to give the Kohawks a 6-3 lead.
- White returned to the circle for the sixth and worked around a leadoff walk, recording three-straight outs to earn the shutdown inning. The freshman then came back to work in the seventh and quickly recorded one out but two-straight walks forced a pitching change. Coach Meyer turned to Abby Stock for the final two outs and the junior came up clutch, getting a game-ending double play to secure the victory for the Kohawks.
GAME TWO
COE 10 - SIMPSON 8
Game Facts
- The Kohawks continued the scoring early in game two, putting a pair of runs on the board in the opening inning. Natalie Blank singled with one out and was immediately driven home thanks to a two-run homer from Keera Ball. Simpson answered the homer with one run in the top of the second, getting a one-out RBI to slice its deficit in half.
- Coe stayed hot at the plate in the bottom of the second, getting two more runs after three hits. Chloe Severson doubled to start the inning and later scored on a single from Boeckenstedt. Blank then made it 4-1, doubling to right-center while driving in Boeckenstedt.
- Simpson refused to go away despite the deficit, answering with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Hannah Ausenhus, Coe's game-two starter, avoided any further damage in the inning, getting back-to-back outs to keep the Kohawks in front.
- Ausenhus' offense picked her up in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on five hits while using one Storm error. Milks pinch-hit to start the inning and walked to set the table before a double from Menke put runners on second and third. Boeckenstedt extended Coe's lead back to three in the next at-bat, singling to center to give the hosts a 6-3 lead. The Kohawks got four more RBI prior to the end of the inning as Blank, Ball, Nicki Wood and Severson all drove home runs.
- Ausenhus settled in and worked back-to-back scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, giving the Kohawks a chance to win it in the home half of the sixth. Coe loaded the bases with two outs but a groundout gave Simpson one final chance in the seventh. The Storm clawed back five runs in the top of the seventh inning, getting three RBI hits in the inning to put pressure on the hosts but Abby Stock came in for the final two outs and finished the sweep for Coe.
Up next: Coe will return to action on Tuesday for a midweek doubleheader against Loras College at Clark Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM in Cedar Rapids.
