LINCOLN, Neb. - The Coe College baseball team split a pair of games with Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-5 in the opening game while winning 10-9 in game two. The Prairie Wolves stacked up 14 hits in the opener, posting four extra-base hits en route to the victory. Coe bounced back in the second game, scoring five runs in the first inning to jump ahead early. After a surge from NWU in the sixth and eighth innings tied the game at nine,
Creighton Kreshel hit the game-winning homer in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Kohawks a 10-9 victory. The split moves Coe to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the A-R-C while Nebraska Wesleyan moves to 10-10 on the season and 3-2 in the league.
GAME ONE
NWU 7 - COE 5
Game Facts
- The Kohawks had a strong start in the opening inning, getting back-to-back base runners before a fielder's choice scored the opening round. Coe then quickly loaded the bases after a single from Mitchell Eckardt and a walk from TJ Deardorff. The second run of the inning came on another fielder's choice as Tyler Elliott drove in Creighton Kreshel to make it 2-0.
- Nebraska Wesleyan responded in the second and third inning, scoring one in the second and three in the third to grab a lead. In the third, the Prairie Wolves got three straight one-out singles, scoring two runs before a two-out single scored the fourth.
- Coe slashed the deficit to just one run in the top of the fifth, getting two hits and one run in the frame. James VanHooser led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. The Kohawks run came two batters later, getting an RBI single from Kreshel as VanHooser scored on the play. The Prairie Wolves immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth, getting one run on two hits to regain a two-run lead.
- The Kohawks continued to scrap in the sixth, getting three hits and one run in the inning. Jack Allison opened the inning with a one-out single before moving to second on a wild pitch. VanHooser then walked in the next at-bat as Allison moved to third on a successful steal attempt. The fourth run of the game came on an error by the pitcher, allowing Allison to score from third, making it 5-4.
- NWU extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth, getting a two-run homer with one down in the inning, making it 7-4. Coe scored one final run in the top of the seventh inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Joey Sartain as Eckardt scored from third.
GAME TWO
COE 10 - NWU 9
Game Facts
- Coe jumped ahead early in the game, scoring five runs in the opening frame. Jacob Brosius led off with a walk a quickly moved to second on a stolen base. Brosius then advanced to third on a stolen base after a groundout prior to a walk by TJ Johnson. Kreshel then singled through the left side, driving home Brosius for the opening run. Eckardt walked in the next at-bat, loading the bases for TJ Deardorff, who also walked, adding one more run for Coe. Tyce Johnson was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, picking up another RBI which also forced a pitching change for NWU. Elliott drew another walk in the next at-bat, picking up another RBI as Eckardt scored to make it 4-0. The final run came in the following plate appearance as Daniel Hawes was hit by a pitch, driving home Deardorff to end the scoring.
- NWU scored a pair of runs in the first and second inning to slice the lead, getting an RBI-single in the first and an RBI-double in the second. The Kohawks answered with two more in the top of the third, getting three hits and two runs. Coe got back-to-back doubles from Hawes and Brosius, as the latter drove in Hawes to make it 6-2. Brosius then made it 7-2 after some solid base running, stealing third before scoring on a wild pitch. The Kohawks scored one more in the top of the fourth to pad their lead, getting a sacrifice fly from Elliott as Kreshel scored with two outs.
- NWU cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth, getting three runs on four hits.. Three-straight singles for the Paririe Wolves produced RBI to slice the lead to just three at 8-5. Coe responded in the eighth after three-straight scoreless innings, getting a leadoff triple from Tyce Johnson to start the inning. Elliott then produced an RBI with a groundout to third, driving in Tyce Johnson to increase the lead to 9-5.
- The hosts continued the comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to tie the game at 9-9. NWU got four two-out RBI in the inning, getting a single, double and single to tie the game before the end of the frame. Coe regained the lead for good in the top of the ninth inning, get a two-out, solo homer from Kreshel who gave the Kohawks the 10-9 victory.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action next week with another busy stretch of action, beginning with a single game at Daniels Park against Dubuque on Tuesday, April 5.
