Dubuque Knocks Off Baseball on Wednesday to Avoid Season Sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team suffered an 11-5 defeat to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday afternoon in the final game of the regular-season series. Coe, which won the first two games in Dubuque on March 29, fell behind early in the third matchup after three runs for UD in the opening two innings. The Kohawks battled back, scoring three runs in the sixth to square the game but the Spartans scored seven in the top of the seventh to take control. The loss drops the Kohawks to 10-10 on the season and 5-4 in the league while UD improves to 12-9 overall and 4-5 in the A-R-C.

Game Facts
  • Dubuque jumped ahead early in the game, scoring once in the first and twice in the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead. The Spartans got three hits in the opening inning before a bases-loaded walk gave them a 1-0 lead. Coe limited the damage for the Spartans as the Kohawks turned a 6-4-3 double-play to escape the inning.
  • The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the second, getting a pair of hits while taking advantage of one Kohawk error. A walk, followed by a triple made it 2-0 UD before a misplayed single allowed the third run to score.
  • Coe bounced back in the third inning, scoring twice to slash the deficit to just one thanks to a pair of hits. Reid Rausch reached with a two-out walk and immediately advanced to third on a double from TJ Johnson. The pair then scored in Coe's next at-bat as Mitchell Eckardt tripled to right-center, giving the Kohawks their first two runs of the game.
  • The Kohawks continued the comeback in the sixth, after scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Coe got four hits and three runs in the inning, taking its first lead of the afternoon at 5-3. Creighton Kreshel doubled with one out and was immediately driven in on an RBI single by Tyler Elliott. Two batters later, James VanHooser gave Coe the lead with another single, this time driving in Elliott from second. Jacob Brosius drove home the final run of the frame with two down, singling home Jack Allison who had reached earlier on a walk.
  • UD immediately responded in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs to regain its advantage. The visitors racked up seven hits and seven runs in the inning, getting RBI from six different hitters. UD led 10-5 after the explosive inning and added another insurance run in the top of the ninth and managed to cruise to the 11-5 victory.

Up next: The Kohawks are back on the diamond this weekend for a three-game series with Central, currently scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Friday will feature one game at 3 PM while the Kohawks and Dutch will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 PM.
