Dubuque Takes a Pair of Games from Softball on Thursday

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College softball team suffered a pair of defeats to the University of Dubuque on Thursday afternoon, falling 9-2 in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap. The Kohawks and Spartans were scoreless for the first three innings but the hosts put up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held Coe to just two runs in the victory. It was a low-scoring affair in the second game, with Dubuque scoring the lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a one-out double. Coe threatened with base runners in the sixth and seventh innings but UD got some timely outs to secure the shutout and the sweep. The losses drop Coe to 18-10 overall and 7-5 in the American Rivers Conference while UD improves to 21-7 and 9-5 in the league.

GAME ONE
DUBUQUE 9 - COE 2
Game Facts
  • UD threatened first in the game, putting runners on the corner with two outs but the Kohawks got out of the jam on a groundout to the shortstop. The Kohawks then threatened in the top of the fourth, getting a pair of base runners on a hit by pitch and walk but the hosts kept it scoreless on a fielder's choice.
  • The Spartans exploded in the bottom of the inning, getting six hits and eight runs to take command of the contest. The hosts got a single to lead off before the first out of the inning but five-straight hitters reached base to start the scoring. A three-run double gave UD the lead before it blew the game open later in the inning, scoring five more runs on another three-run double and a one-run single.
  • Coe put together a few runs to answer in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs to keep things interesting with six outs remaining. The Kohawks did all the damage with two down in the inning, getting three-straight base runners including a two-run single from Madi Parson who drove home Natalie Blank and Heather Boeckenstedt. UD put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring a run to restore a seven-run advantage which it held for the final two innings.

GAME TWO
DUBUQUE 1 - COE 0
Game Facts
  • The Kohawks and Spartans went scoreless until the bottom of the second when the hosts got the first hit but Coe kept it tied with a groundout to strand a runner on third. UD threatened again an inning later, getting a pair of runners with one down but a line-out double play got Coe out of the jam.
  • The Spartans had another scoring chance to lead off the bottom of the fourth, putting runners on second and third on a double and an error. The hosts then hit into another double play, trying to advance home on a foul ball to left field but the Kohawks cut the run down and then ended the threat with a groundout. Coe attempted to take advantage of the momentum, getting a leadoff double from Chloe Severson but she was left at second after three-straight outs.
  • UD finally took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, getting a single to start the inning before moving the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt. The game-winning hit came in the next at-bat as the Spartans got an RBI double to grab the 1-0 lead. Coe threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, getting runners on base in both frames but UD pitched its way out of a pair of jams to secure the victory.

Up next: The Kohawks will return to action this weekend for their final A-R-C home doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 when they host Nebraska Wesleyan.
