Softball Splits Home-Opening Doubleheader with Wartburg

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team split a pair of games with Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon at Clark Field, falling 8-6 in the opening game while earning a 5-0 victory in game two. The Kohawks and Knights went back-and-forth in the first game of the day, trading runs during the initial five innings of the contest. Wartburg took the lead for good in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs in the frame to grab the win. Coe got a dominant pitching outing in game two as freshman hurler Abbie White tossed a three-hit shutout to secure the win and the split for the Kohawks. The results move Coe to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in the A-R-C while Wartburg moves to 18-8 and 5-3 in the league.

Game Facts
  • The Knights grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, getting a two-run homer with two outs in the first. The Kohawks responded in the bottom of the second, getting two hits and two runs to square the game up. Bree Mangelsen led off with a single and was immediately driven in as Keera Ball hit her first career homer in the next at-bat. 
  • Wartburg answered with one in the top of the third, regaining the lead on a two-out RBI-single but a sacrifice fly for Coe tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Skyler Stookey picked up the RBI for the Kohawks, driving in Natalie Blank to tie the score at three. 
  • The visitors again responded in the top of the fourth inning, scoring again with two outs on an RBI-single to regain a 4-3 lead. Coe responded three half-innings later, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth to grab its first lead of the game. The Kohawks got three-straight base runners with two outs in the frame including an-RBI hit from Mangelsen. The fifth run came on an error by the Knights, allowing pinch-runner Maya Lindgren to score from third. 
  • Wartburg took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning, getting a three-run homer from Ella Link who cleared the bases to give the Knights an 8-5 lead. The Kohawks threatened in the sixth, adding one run on a two-out single from Madi Parson but Wartburg closed the game with a 1-2-3 seventh to grab the opener.

Game Facts
  • It was a slow start the game two with neither team scoring in the opening two innings. The Kohawks took the lead thanks to back-to-back base hits, getting a leadoff single from Shaylee Dodd before an RBI double from Heather Boeckenstedt
  • Coe added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits while taking advantage of an error from the Knights. The Kohawks got four-straight base runners with one out, grabbing their second run of the game on a hit by pitch. The hosts added two more runs in the inning after a Wartburg pitching change, getting RBI from Blank and Parson. Blank made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center before Parson singled home Boeckenstedt to give Coe a 4-0 advantage. White returned to the circle for the fifth and continued to dominate, working a 1-2-3 frame in the sixth. 
  • The hosts added one final insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a solo homer from Addie Menke to end the scoring at 5-0. White again came back to the rubber in the top of the seventh, working a perfect inning with a groundout, strikeout and a line out to end the game. 
Up next: Coe returns to action tomorrow for another A-R-C doubleheader at Luther College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM in Decorah.
