CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The fifth-seeded Coe College baseball team picked up a pair of victories on the opening day of the American Rivers Conference tournament on Friday. Coe started its day with a win over fourth-seeded Luther 3-0 in the opening game and capped off the perfect start with an emphatic 13-2 victory over top-seeded Buena Vista in seven innings. The Kohawks benefited from a stellar pitching effort in game one as senior hurler
TJ Deardorff tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out five. The offense produced some timely hits and sacrifices despite putting up just four total hits as three runs proved more than enough for the dominant Deardorff. The bats exploded in Coe's second game of the day, posting season-highs in hits, RBI and runs in a 13-2 victory over the Beavers.
Creighton Kreshel was one of the standout hitters at the plate, falling just a double shy of the cycle as the sophomore drove home five RBI to lead the team. The wins move the Kohawks to 19-19 on the season as they advance into the winner's bracket of the A-R-C Tournament where they will take on second-seeded Loras.
GAME ONE

- Coe got the game started with an early scoring chance, putting runners on first and third in the first inning but back-to-back outs ended the threat. - The Kohawks found the early breakthrough in the top of the third, getting one run on two hits in the frame. Jacob Brosius and TJ Johnson reached for Coe in back-to-back one-out at-bats, giving Reid Rausch a chance to open the scoring. Rausch came through with a single to left on an 0-2 count, driving home Brosius to give Coe a 1-0 lead.
- Luther looked for a response in the bottom of the third, getting a pair of two-out base runners after a single and hit batsmen. The Norse then tried to tie the game on a single to right but Tyler Elliott came up firing and delivered a strike to James VanHooser who applied the inning-ending tag.
- The game remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth inning when the Kohawks added a key insurance run. Coe took advantage of a pair of hit batters, putting runners on first and second with just one out. Both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball in Coe's next at-bat with Jack Allison at the dish. Allison then made it 2-0 with a productive out, flying out to right-field while driving in Rausch.
- Luther again searched for an answer in the bottom of the eighth, getting a leadoff base runner on a Kohawk error. VanHooser quickly eliminated the runner during the next at-bat, throwing him out as he tried to swipe second. Deardorff issued a two-out free pass later in the inning but escaped the jam with a lineout to left-field.
- The Kohawks added a final insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, getting a key RBI single from Brosius with one out. Deardorff returned to the mound for the ninth inning and the senior worked a perfect frame, getting a pair of flyouts and one groundout to clinch the game for Coe.
