Baseball Falls to Buena Vista in Final A-R-C Game of Regular Season

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team suffered a 7-3 defeat to Buena Vista University on Sunday in its final American Rivers Conference game of the regular season. The Kohawks, who secured the fifth-seed in next week's A-R-C Tournament, fell behind 3-0 after three and a half innings but battled back to tie the game at three in the fifth. Buena Vista responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning and later added an insurance run in the eighth, building a large enough lead to secure the victory. The loss drops Coe to 17-18 overall and 12-12 in the league while Buena Vista improves to 26-12 and 18-6 in the league.

Game Facts
  • Buena Vista struck first in the rubber game of the series, taking advantage of a Kohawk error with two outs in the second inning. BVU strung together back-to-back hits including an RBI single which gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The Beavers added to their lead an inning later, striking again with two outs on a solo homer to right field to grab a 2-0 lead. The visitors scored for the third consecutive inning in the top of the fourth, making it 3-0 on a double play with runners on the corners. 
  • Coe got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting one hit in the frame while taking advantage of one Beaver error. TJ Johnson reached on a bunt single to start the inning and was later joined by Creighton Kreshel who was hit by a pitch with one down. TJ Deardorff then reached on an error by the Beaver shortstop, loading the bases for Tyce Johnson. The seven-hole hitter for Coe put a ball in play in the next at-bat, reaching on a fielder's choice that also allowed the Kohawks' first run to score. 
  • The hosts tied the game just one inning later, adding two runs in the fifth to knot the score at 3. Mitchell Eckardt singled with one out and moved to second on a productive groundout from Jacob Brosius. TJ Johnson drove home the first run of the inning in the next plate appearance, doubling down the left-field line to plate Eckardt. A two-out walk for Reid Rausch then put runners on first and second for Kreshel who delivered another RBI double, driving home Johnson to tie the game at 3. 
  • BVU answered Coe's rally with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to immediately regain the lead. The Beavers picked up three runs on three hits in the inning including a two-run single with two outs in the frame. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning, capitalizing on a leadoff double to stretch their lead to four runs. The Beavers then worked a pair of scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, hanging on to secure the series victory. 
Up next: The Kohawks will finish off the regular season tomorrow with the deciding leg of the Bremner Cup as they host Cornell College at Bill Quinby Field at 3:30 PM.
