CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team suffered a 17-4 defeat to Cornell College in its final regular-season game on Monday afternoon. The Rams, who secured the 2021-22 Bremner Cup with the victory, took an early lead in the game with one run in the first inning and four in the third. The visitors then added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 7-1 lead. Coe battled back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to slice its deficit to three runs. The Kohawks threatened again in the next inning, getting runners on second and third with no outs but the Rams escaped the jam unscathed. Cornell clinched the contest in the top of the eighth inning, scoring 10 runs in the frame while sending 13 batters to the plate. The loss drops Coe to 17-19 on the regular season while Cornell improves to 17-23 overall.

- Cornell quickly opened the scoring in the game, getting a leadoff homer from Kale Rose who gave the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Kohawks answered in the bottom of the first, getting the run back on a sacrifice fly. Mitchell Eckardt led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Eckardt then advanced to third on a productive flyout from Jacob Brosius before TJ Johnson drove the leadoff man home with a sac-fly.
- Both teams went scoreless in the second inning but the visitors took early control with a four-spot in the third. Cornell posted five hits in the inning, getting four RBI hits en route to the early 5-1 lead. The Rams threatened again in the fourth and fifth innings, getting a pair of runners on base but Kohawk reliever Ethan O'Donnell escaped both jams to keep it a four-run game.
- Cornell added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning, extending their lead to 7-1. The Rams tacked on three more hits in the frame including an RBI single to make it 6-1. The visitors scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly with one out, making it 7-1 before Coe secured the final out catching the runner from first as he tried to advance to second.
- The Kohawks showed signs of life in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting back-to-back base runners before Kreshel's sacrifice bunt made it second and third. TJ Deardorff then delivered a two-RBI double to right field, driving home TJ Johnson and Reid Rausch to make it 7-3. Tyler Elliott sliced the deficit to just three runs one batter later, delivering a clutch two-out single to score Deardorff.
- Coe threatened to cut further into the lead in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners on second and third with no outs. Cornell escaped the jam on a fielder's choice grounder to third, cutting down the runner at third in a run down. The play resulted in a pair of outs for Cornell though as two Kohawks were occupying third base at the same time. The scoring opportunity ended one batter later as a strikeout stranded a runner on second, keeping it a 7-4 game.
- The visitors regained control of the contest for good in the top of the eighth inning, scoring 10 additional insurance runs to make it a 17-4 game. The Kohawks returned to the plate for one final chance to extend the game but the Rams got a perfect eighth inning to clinch the victory.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action on Thursday when they open up their A-R-C Tournament run. Coe, the fifth seed, will take on fourth-seeded Luther College at Daniels Park at 11 AM.
