CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College men's basketball head coach Bryan Martin announced the hire of John Payan as his new assistant coach earlier this week. Payan, who is a 2018 graduate of Saint Ambrose, joins the Kohawk basketball program after serving as a graduate assistant on the men's basketball staff at the University of Dubuque.

"We are thrilled to welcome John to Coe College as our new assistant men's basketball coach," Martin said. "Coach Payan brings great experience to our program as both an assistant coach and also as a highly respected Director and Clinician for the local TNT5 Iowa Prep Basketball program. I love John's energy and have always been impressed by his ability to recruit and develop high-character student-athletes. He will be a great addition to our program and the campus community."

While at UD, Payan helped coach at both the varsity and JV level, serving as the head coach for the Spartans Junior Varsity squad. During his two years in Dubuque, Payan and the Spartans posted a 35-6 overall record including a 28-2 mark in the A-R-C while earning one NCAA Tournament birth. Along with experience at Dubuque, Payan has served as an Assistant Director, Clinician and Iowa Prep Coach since 2018 for the TNT5/Iowa Prep Basketball AAU Organization. Prior to his time at Dubuque, Payan served as an assistant coach at Cornell College where he was a bench coach for all games and led the guard development during practices and skill breakdowns.
