ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Coe College men's soccer team earned its first victory of 2022 on Sunday afternoon, winning 2-1 over Rockford University. The Kohawks had control of the game early in the first half, registering a pair of early shots but
Ian Kearney opened the scoring with his second goal of the season from outside the box after slicing through a handful of Regent defenders. The hosts tied the match just under 15 minutes into the half but a late goal from
Connor Handrick was enough to give the Kohawks their first win of the year. The result moves Coe to 1-3-1 overall while Rockford falls to 1-1-3 on the year.

COE 2 - ROCKFORD 1
- Coe had a pair of shots before the 10-minute mark with Carter Collis and Sam Sanchez having shots saved by the Rockford goalie. The Kohawks opening goal came on a nice move from defense to attack, moving the ball to the midfield where Kearney picked up possesion. The freshman drove toward the box and left a few defenders in his wake before pulling the trigger from just outside the box, beating the keeper for his second of the year.
- Rockford quickly tied the match in the second half, scoring a goal in the 65th minute to level the score. Coe went back on the attack, registering a shot just a few mintues later but the attempt was saved. The visitors found the game-winner in the 77th minute after a failed clearance from the visitors. Kevin Williams corralled a bouncing ball just outside the box and played a pass across the edge of the box to Handrick who hit a side-footed shot along the ground to beat the keeper. The Kohawks hung on for the victory over the final few minutes of the match to secure their first win of the season.
Up next: The Kohawks will be back in action on Friday, September 17 when they host Bethel University at 7:30 PM at Clark Field.
