Volleyball Sweeps Luther at Home to Open Conference Play

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College volleyball team opened American Rivers Conference play on Tuesday evening with an emphatic 3-0 sweep over Luther College. The Kohawks dominated the match from start to finish, surrendering just 10, 10 and 13 points to the Norse in the three frames. As a team, Coe hit .326, recording 37 kills to just nine errors. Kate Tidman led the way for the hosts, posting eight kills and an attacking percentage of .368. Grace Lueken and Madi Parson tied for second on the team in kills, posting seven each. The result moves Coe to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the A-R-C while Luther drops to 3-4 on the year and 0-1 in the league.

  • Coe opened up a 12-3 lead in the first set before Luther was forced into a timeout. The momentum stayed with the hosts following the break, extending their lead to 18-5 after a serving streak from Maddy Maahs. The Kohawks cruised to a 25-10 victory in the first set, outsourcing the Norse 6-5 down the stretch. It was a balanced attack for Coe in the first, with four players registering three kills each. 
  • The Kohawks continued to dominate in set number two, grabbing an early 9-3 lead in the period. Parson had a stretch of eight straight serves in the early portion to help the Kohawks grab the lead. Maddie Harris and Tidman also had solid serving runs in the frame, each recording a stretch of four in a row to help Coe extend its advantage to 17-5. The Kohawks maintained their lead for the final few points of the set, stretching their advantage to 2-0. Tidman had a team-high four kills in the set while Maahs had nine assists. 
  • Coe and Luther battled back-and-forth in the first few points but the hosts erased a three-point deficit early on. The Kohawks used a 7-0 run to regain momentum, getting an impressive serving streak from Lueken, who added three aces during the spurt. Luther continued to fight, closing the gap to three but Coe buckled down and scored 12 of the final 16 points to clinch the victory. 
Up next: Coe returns to non-conference competition this weekend at the UW-Whitewater Invite where it will take on Whitewater, North Central and Concordia (Wis.).
