Men's Soccer Concedes Twice in Second Half, Drops Bremner Cup Match at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College men's soccer team scored twice on Wednesday but came up short against Cornell in the Bremner Cup match, falling 4-2 to the Rams. Cornell jumped ahead, quickly finding the back of the net in the second minute. Coe immediately responded just over a minute later thanks to Tsubasa Iwamoto who scored his first goal of the campaign. The topsy-turvy first half continued with the Rams regaining a one-goal lead, scoring again in the fifth minute of the period. Coe again had an answer for the goal, knotting the game at two in the sixth minute as Esaie Mososongo beat the Ram keeper. Cornell started hot in the second half, scoring the final two goals of the match in the opening four minutes of the period. The Kohawks continued to battle for the remainder of the match but the hosts clung to the lead and secured the victory. The loss drops Coe to 1-6-1 overall while Cornell improves to 3-2-1 on the season.

GAME FACTS:
CORNELL 4 - COE 2
  • Cornell immediately put pressure on the Kohawk defense, rcaking up a pair of shots and three corners in the first minute-plus. The Rams opened the scoring just a few moments later, capitalizing on their strong start with a 1-0 advantage. Coe scored just under 90 seconds later, getting the goal from Iwamoto who finished after an assist from Mososongo. The hosts retook the lead under two minutes later, getting a goal from Aidan Lerch to make it 2-1. The Kohawks kept up the torrid pace of the match, tying the score at two just over a minute later as Mososongo scored his first of the season for the Kohawks. Coe had the only shot attempt in the remaining 30-plus minutes of the half but were unable to make it count as the game was tied after 45 minutes.
  • The Rams were quick to pounce after the break, getting a pair of goals in the opening four minutes of the period. The opening goal came from a quick-moving attack for the Rams, resulting in a ball crossed inside the area which was finished by Blake Soto. The final goal of the match was an individual effort as Zach Miller drove down the left flank before firing a shot into the far side-netting of the Kohawk goal.
Up next: Coe returns to action on Saturday, September 24 for its first A-R-C contest as it travels to Indianola to take on Simpson at 3:30 PM.
