CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team improved to 3-0 to start its 2023-24 season, outlasting Knox College 77-72 in the team's home opener. The Kohawks raced out to an excellent start in the contest, outscoring the visitors 17-13 in the opening period before a dominant second quarter where Coe edged Knox 24-14. The visiting Prairie Fire responded in the third quarter despite trailing by as many as 18 in the early moments, ripping off a 30-9 run to end the quarter and grab a three-point lead ahead of the fourth. The Kohawks regained the lead and control of the game early in the final quarter, starting the period on a 10-2 run which put the hosts back on top for good. Freshman guard
Taylor Brunson had a team-high 15 points in the win, hitting 5-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the line.
Kaalyn Petersen and
Kelly Knight each finished with 13 points while Petersen had her first double-double of the year adding 10 boards.

GAME FACTS
- Knox and Coe both struggled on offense in the opening quarter but it was the visitors who grabbed an early lead, taking a 9-4 lead just under six minutes into the game. The Kohawks responded with a dominant spurt over the next three minutes, scoring 11 unanswered points which featured a pair of 3s from Ellie Wisner. Knox scored the next two buckets to make it a two-point game but Brunson ended the quarter with a buzzer-beating floater, giving her team a 17-13 lead after one. The visitors took control of the opening two minutes of the second period, outscoring Coe 10-4 to regain a two-point advantage. The Kohawks dominated the final six minutes of the quarter, putting together a 20-4 outburst which included points from five different players. Coe started the third quarter with back-to-back buckets from Brunson, extending the lead to 18 points. Knox refused to go away, responding with 14-straight points to pull within four. The run continued despite Coe settling in, getting a quarter-ending 16-9 run to pull ahead 57-54 ahead of the final period. The hosts quickly got back on top in the fourth, ripping off a 10-2 spurt in the opening four-plus minutes. Knox continued to battle over the closing minutes but Coe's defense forced the issue, holding the visitors to just 3-of-9 shooting in the final 4:27.
