GRINNELL, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team secured its fourth win in a row to start the season on Friday evening, defeating Grinnell College 73-63 in an in-state battle. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead against the Pioneers, edging the hosts 18-11 in the opening quarter. Grinnell settled in over the next two quarters and hung with the Kohawks, getting outscored by just one before the fourth quarter. The Kohawks put the game away early in the final period, opening the quarter on a 14-6 run, building a lead large enough to coast for the final few minutes of the game.
Caydee Kirkham had a phenomenal night running the point for the Kohawks, scoring 28 points while adding 12 boards for her first career double-double.
Kaalyn Petersen made it two Kohawks to achieve the feat, finishing with 16 points and 12 boards for her second-straight double-double.
Taylor Brunson had another solid game as Coe's second guard, finishing third on the team with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

- Coe raced out to the early lead, taking an 11-4 advantage just 2:31 into the game as Kirkham scored a quick seven points. Grinnell settled in and stopped the spurt, trading buckets with Coe over the final moments of the quarter as the visitors led 18-11 after one. The Kohawks again started the second quarter on top, scoring seven of the opening nine points to extend the lead to 25-13. Grinnell fought back before the end of the quarter, answering with a strong 13-8 run to help close the gap at the half. Coe started strong for the third-straight quarter out of the break, regaining a double-digit lead with a quick 8-4 spurt. Grinnell continued to hang tough and slowly chipped away at the deficit, narrowly edging Coe 13-10 before the expiry of the period. The Kohawks put the game away for good early in the fourth, getting a Kirkham-led run to start the period. The sophomore guard scored 10 of the opening 20 points of the quarter and helped her team to a 14-6 run, ultimately putting the game on ice.
