MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team started its 2023-24 season with a road victory on Wednesday evening, defeating Cornell College 76-51 to earn a Bremner Cup team for the college. The Kohawks outscored the Rams in all four quarters of the victory, using a dominant second and third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Caydee Kirkham had a team-high 18 points, hitting five of her 11 shot attempts while adding seven assists and six boards.
Ellie Wisner and
Kelly Knight were close behind Kirkham, hitting the double-digit mark with 13 and 10 points each.

GAME FACTS
- Cornell got off to a solid start but Coe quickly answered, scoring eight of the next nine points. The teams traded small runs before the end of the quarter however six-straight points gave the visitors a 19-15 lead after one quarter. The Kohawk defense tightened in the second frame, holding Cornell to just 26.7 percent shooting as the Rams converted only four field goals in the quarter. Coe was 6-of-18 in the second but managed to extend its lead, getting five second chance points and seven from its bench. Cornell momentarily cut the lead to single-digits in the third quarter but the Kohawks again responded, closing the quarter on a 15-8 run which featured six points from Knight on a pair of 3s. Coe's starters put the game to rest in the fourth quarter, immediately pushing the advantage to nearly 20 in the first three minutes. The Rams put together one final push with less than five minutes to play but Coe easily maintained its lead, cruising to the season-opening win.
