Women’s Basketball Falls to Wartburg in Final Regular Season Road Contest

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team suffered a 71-53 defeat to #20 Wartburg College in its final regular season road game on Wednesday evening. The Kohawks fell behind quickly in the opening quarter, spotting the hosts a 23-15 lead after 10 minutes of action. The Knights extended their lead in the second period, outscoring Coe 14-5 to grab a 17-point advantage at half. Coe fought back in the third quarter, edging Wartburg 17-11 to pull within 11 points of the Knight lead. The hosts put the contest away for good late in the final quarter, ending the game on a 14-7 spurt to secure the victory. Coe was led by a pair of double-digit scorers as Kelly Knight and Molly Buck paced the offense. Knight was the team leader with 18 points, falling two shy of her season-high while Buck added 12 points and eight boards. With the loss, Coe drops to 17-7 overall and 9-6 in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 20-4 on the season and 15-0 in the league.

  • Buck started the scoring in the game just over 20 seconds in, converting a layup to give Coe an initial lead. Wartburg answered with four consecutive points, getting a 3 and a single free throw to take the lead. The visitors regained the advantage just over a minute later, getting a 3 from Meagan Harvey to go up 5-4. Wartburg dominated the following five minutes, ripping off a 19-3 spurt to take control of the contest. The Kohawks had a strong close to the period and stayed within touching distance, scoring the final seven points of the quarter to pull within eight after one. 
  • Wartburg stayed hot in the early moments of the second, outscoring Coe 8-3 in the first 2:56 of the period. Coe struggled offensively for the final seven minutes of the half, getting just two free throws during the span. The defensive effort kept Coe in the game despite the offensive struggles, holding Wartburg to six points in the final five minutes of the quarter. 
  • The Kohawks slowly chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 7-5 in the first three minutes. Knight and the Kohawks picked up more momentum to end the period, using a 10-4 quarter-ending run to draw within 11 points. The Kohawks got points from five different players during the run including a 3 from Maya Lindgren and layups from Buck and Kaalyn Petersen
  • Petersen cut the Knight advantage to nine on the first possession of the fourth, cashing in on a layup to make it 48-39. Wartburg regained control of the game over the next few minutes, slowing down the action while converting on some clutch 3-pointers. The Knights then put the game out of reach for good, ending the contest with a 14-7 run to put any comeback chances to rest. 
 
Up next: Coe concludes the regular season on Saturday, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan at Kohawk Arena at 4 PM.
