DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team scored one run in the eighth inning and two runs in the ninth inning, earning a 4-2 come-from-behind victory at Luther College on Tuesday afternoon. Coe, which got a strong pitching performance from
Matthew Chapman, also benefited from solid relief efforts from
Jacob Schmit, Tyce Johnson, Michael Bonner and
Jack Allison. As a whole, the staff allowed just eight hits and two unearned runs while recording three strikeouts. Coe struck first midway through the game, getting one run on an RBI single from Allison in the fifth. Luther answered with both of its runs in the bottom of the inning, getting a pair of RBI to regain the lead. Coe threatened in the sixth and seventh before finally cashing in during the eighth to tie the game on an RBI double from
Tyler Elliott. The Kohawks completed the comeback in the ninth, scoring two runs on a pair of free passes as
Reid Rausch and Elliott put Coe ahead 4-2. Allison came in for Bonner with two outs in the ninth after a pair of runners reached and did his job, recording his third save of the year to secure the victory. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Coe and improves it to 14-14 and 6-9 in the A-R-C while Luther drops to 19-11 and 12-3.

- Luther registered one hit in each of the first three innings but Chapman did well to eliminate any threat early on. Coe had its first chance in the fourth, getting a pair of one-out hits from Rausch and Elliott but the Kohawks left two runners on base after a groundout and lineout. The Norse responded with two one-out base runners in their half of the frame but Coe's defense came up clutch as Creighton Kreshel eliminated the potential opening run with an outfield assist following a single.
- Coe broke through in the fifth, getting a clutch two-out single from Allison who put his team ahead 1-0. Luther responded immediately, scoring both of its runs in the bottom of the inning on two hits and one Coe error. The Kohawks threatened in the sixth and seventh, getting a runner in scoring position in both but Luther maintained its lead with some key outs. The visitors finally cashed in during the eighth, tying the game at two on an RBI double from Elliott. Reid Rausch was hit by a pitch with one out and immediately came around to score as the Kohawk right fielder delivered a clutch double to left-center.
- The comeback continued in the ninth with Coe adding two more runs on one hit. Gavin Guns was hit by a pitch to lead off and was pinch run for by Anthony Ranallo who moved to second on a sacrifice. Mitchell Eckardt continued the inning for Coe in the next at-bat, giving the Kohawks first and third with a single to right. Luther intentionally walked Jake Brosius in the next plate appearance to load the bases with two outs. Rausch brought home the first run with another hit by pitch, drawing the free pass with the count full. Elliott added an insurance run the following plate appearance, drawing another walk to extend the lead to 4-2. Bonner returned to the mound for the ninth and quickly got two outs but then allowed two Norse hitters to reach. Allison came in for the final out and locked down the win, getting a flyout to short to end the game.
Up next: Coe remains on the road for its next series, taking on Simpson College this Friday and Saturday, playing the Storm in one game on Friday, April 21 at 6 PM before a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 at 1 PM.
