MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team began its 2023 schedule with a dominant 8-1 victory over Cornell College on Tuesday afternoon. The win was highlighted by a perfect 6-0 mark in singles as Coe bounced back from its lone loss in doubles to close the door on the Rams.
Sophia Fain, Claudia Bilkey and
Jania Carter-Johnson all began the year with a pair of wins, collecting victories in both singles and doubles.
Maddie Schultz and
Alliandra Hagness quickly put their season-opening loss at number one doubles in the rearview, responding with singles wins at number one and number two.
Carlie Miller was also victorious in singles after a rest in the doubles session, earning a 6-0, 6-2 win at number four. Bilkey and Fain teamed up in the opening session of the match and earned an 8-6 win at number three doubles before Carter-Johnson and
Jaden Fuqua secured a come-from-behind 8-6 victory.
Up next: The Kohawks continue the regular season this upcoming Saturday, traveling to Kirksville, Missouri for the Truman Invitational on September 2.
