Four Kohawks hit double-digits, Women’s Basketball eases past Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team got back on track with an easy 83-69 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon. Coe led for all but one minute and 21 seconds, outscoring Buena Vista in three quarters. The Kohawks started strong in the victory, shooting 58.8 percent in the opening quarter en route to a 26-16 lead. Coe continued to push its lead in the second period, extending its lead to 17 points at the break. Buena Vista fought back in the third quarter, edging the Kohawks to pull within 11 points with 10 minutes to play. Coe put the game away for good in the first half of the fourth period, opening the frame with a 17-7 spurt to push its lead past 20 points. Taylor Brunson (18), Kaalyn Petersen (14), Taryn Kravig (13) and Kelly Knight (12) led a balanced scoring attack for the Kohawks, contributing to Coe's impressive 52.5 shooting percentage for the contest. Kravig, a freshman from Greeley, Colorado, posted a new career-high and hit double-figures for the second time this season.

GAME FACTS
  • BVU had a solid start to the game, going 3-of-4 in the first two minutes of action. Coe quickly answered with a strong stretch, ripping off a 14-5 run to go up 19-11 with just over three minutes left in the period. Coe extended the lead to 10 just before the end of the quarter, getting seven of the final 12 points including a 3 from Knight. Coe owned the second period, holding BVU to just 5-of-14 shooting while hitting a trio of 3s. Seven different players scored in the quarter with Alina Anderson, Kravig and Knight knocking down triples. The Beavers clawed back into the game in the first seven minutes of the third, using a 15-8 spurt to pull within 10 points at 52-42. Coe maintained its double-digit advantage ahead of the fourth quarter, narrowly edging the hosts 7-6 in the closing minutes of the third. The Kohawks put their foot on the gas pedal and pulled away in the first five minutes of the fourth, beginning the period with a 17-7 run. Brunson spearheaded the run, scoring six points while Caydee Kirkham added four of her own. Buena Vista continued to battle in the final minutes, scoring 14 of the final 21 points but the gap was far too wide to overcome.
