STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College football team got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Buena Vista University Beavers 35-13. The Kohawks out-gained the Beavers 454-212 overall and outrushed the hosts 297-50, displaying its dominance in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Coe got the scoring started in the opening quarter with
Trenton Barnes' first of three rushing touchdowns to make it 7-0. Coe added another score in the second quarter as
Brady Kelly found
Jeron Senters for a three-yard TD. BVU sliced the deficit to eight early in the third quarter with its first touchdown of the game but Coe responded by pulling away, scoring three unanswered touchdowns as Barnes scored twice while Kelly hooked up with
Latrell Taylor for a 32-yard strike. The Beavers scored their second touchdown in the dying moments of the game, making it 35-13 for the final score. Kelly showed well in relief of an injured
Clay Krousie, passing for 122 yards and two scores as he was 12-of-19 overall. Barnes rushed for a career-high 194 yards and three scores. The senior from Madison, Indiana now has six 100-plus yard games on the season as he eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. Coe's defense was impressive once again, holding the Beavers to 2.4 yards per carry and 21-of-34 passing.
Ben Adelsberger had a team-high five tackles while
Mitchel Helmkamp, Alex Aitchison and Adelsberger recorded sacks for the Kohawk defense.

GAME FACTS
- Barnes got the party started on Coe's opening drive, totaling 20 yards and one score to put the Kohawks up 7-0. Kelly added the second touchdown on the first drive of the second quarter, hitting Senters for a short three-yard score to make it 14-0. Buena Vista kept things interesting before the end of the first half, holding Coe scoreless for the remainder of the period after some sloppy offensive possessions for the visitors. The Beavers cut the deficit on their opening drive of the third quarter, marching 74 yards on 13 plays before finding the endzone on with an eight-yard pass. Barnes and the offense responded on the next drive, putting together a dominant 10-play, 69-yard touchdown drive that was finished with Barnes' second score of the day. Kelly made it 28-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, capping off a quick-strike drive with a 32-yard connection to Taylor. The Kohawk defense put the icing on the cake on the following BV drive, forcing a fumble on second down as Isaac Stevens stripped the ball while Sam Shaw scooped it up. Barnes helped capitalize on the turnover just a few plays later, punching in from one-yard out after totaling 33 yards on the drive. Buena Vista managed one final touchdown in the waning moments of the game, going 70 yards in 10 plays to finish the scoring.
