Men’s Basketball drops conference opener at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team suffered a defeat to Loras College in its American Rivers Conference opener on Tuesday evening, falling 90-74 to the Duhawks. Coe built an early lead in the first half with five strong minutes. Loras ripped off its first big run midway through the half, scoring 18 unanswered points to take a 31-23 lead. Coe settled in and kept it close, inching back to a six-point deficit at the break. The Kohawks stormed back in the first four minutes of the second half, outscoring Loras 10-2 for a 50-48 lead. The hosts scored 22 of the next 23 points to take control for good, using another big run to swing the momentum. Coe was 0-for-5 during the stretch with four turnovers while Loras went 7-of-14 and 7-of-7 from the line.

  • Coe got off to a solid start, opening a 14-9 lead in the first four-plus minutes as Sherry had five quick points during the stretch. Loras closed to the gap to three momentarily but Coe answered with seven straight, getting a layup from Deuce Walters and five more from Sherry to take a 23-13 lead. The hosts ripped off a dominant run during the next 5:19, scoring 18 consecutive points to flip to score in its favor at 31-23. Both teams settled in for the remainder of the half, trading blows throughout the final 6:59. The Kohawks narrowly edged the Duhawks during the span, getting eight points from Walters who helped cut the deficit to six at the break. Loras scored the opening bucket of the second half but Coe responded with 10 unanswered, regaining a 50-48 lead with 16:28 to play. The hosts put together another dominant run over the next 5:34, outscoring Coe 20-1 to take the game's largest lead at 68-51. The Kohawks fought for the final minutes of the game, clawing back to within 14 multiple times but the lead proved too large to overcome in the end.
