CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team pulled of an incredible second-half comeback on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena, defeating the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders 69-65. Coe's third consecutive victory featured a tale of two halves as the Kohawks trailed 36-21 after the opening 20 minutes. The hosts shot just 28 percent from the floor in the first half while MSOE hit 16-of-32 first-half field goals. The Raiders pushed the lead early in the second half, taking a 22-point lead with 15:16 to play. Coe refused to go away quietly, slowly clawing back into the game with a 14-7 run before the midway mark of the half. The Kohawks used the momentum and ripped off a huge scoring run, putting 20 of the next 25 points on the board to tie the game at 60. The squads traded blows over the final four-plus minutes of action but a clutch corner 3 from
Ryan Dolphin gave Coe a multi-possession lead with 1:04 to play.
Cooper Nailor sealed the game in the closing seconds after an MSOE turnover, converting a pair of free throws for the final points of the contest.
Cole Hrubes sparked the second-half run for Coe and finished with a game-high 21 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Kohawk.
Bennett Sherry was Coe's other player in double-figures, scoring 15 points while adding six rebounds, four blocks, three steals and one assist.
COE 69 - MSOE 65
GAME FACTS
- MSOE was nearly unstoppable in the opening half, ripping off a 22-11 run to start the game. During the stretch, the Raiders shot 10-of-15 from the floor and held Coe to 5-of-15 and 1-of-7 from deep. The Raiders pushed their lead late in the first half, scoring eight of the final 12 points to grab a 36-21 lead before the break. The visitors stayed hot in the first five minutes of the second half, using a 12-5 run to pull ahead 48-26 with 15:16 remaining. Coe's run started with back-to-back trips to the line for Jackson Bowman and Deuce Walters, quickly getting the deficit back to 18. A 3 from MSOE slowed Coe's run momentarily but not enough as the hosts responded with a 9-2 run. Hrubes scored six straight to cap off the quick scoring spurt, hitting a mid-range jumper, slamming home a dunk and converting a pair of free throws. MSOE got another bucket to stop the bleeding again but Coe answered right away, scoring 12 unanswered points, nine of which came from Hrbues. The junior hit a pair of 3s during the run and added an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the pressure on MSOE. Coe got another quick scoring run moments later, scoring seven straight points to tie the game at 58. The closing minutes featured back-and-forth action from both squads but Dolphin's 3 proved to be the ultimate difference maker, cashing in the clutch bucket in the dying seconds of the shot clock to give Coe the dramatic victory.
