#19 Men’s Basketball suffers defeat at Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. - The #19 Coe College men's basketball team suffered a road defeat on Saturday afternoon, dropping an A-R-C matchup at Nebraska Wesleyan 70-60. The Kohawks and Paririe Wolves were locked in a back-and-forth game all afternoon, with the lead changing 12 times throughout the contest. Nebraska Wesleyan held a two-point lead at the break, taking advantage of an early double-digit lead. Coe fought back in the second period, gaining a narrow 45-41 lead midway through the second half. The Prairie Wolves closed the game on top, regaining a lead at the seven-minute mark and never looking back as the hosts would finish the contest on a 29-15 run to claim the victory. Cael Schmitt posted a team-high 17 points, leading Coe's offense which got points from just five different players. Josh Schloe (13), TJ Schnurr (11) and Brady Klahn (10) all finished with double-figures for the Kohawks while Bennett Sherry rounded out the scoring with nine.

  • NWU used the home court advantage early, grabbing an immediately 8-2 lead inside the first three minutes. The Prairie Wolves continued to stretch the lead before the 15-minute mark, extending the advantage to 12 points thanks to six unanswered. A cold spell broke out for both teams until just under the 11-minute mark when Schmitt hit a jumper to cut the deficit back to 10 at 19-9. Coe slowly chipped away, clawing back to within six points as the visitors scored seven points in a quick stretch to make it 28-26. The Kohawks got even closer just before the end of the half, scoring the final four points of the period as Schmitt and Schnurr each converted buckets to pull Coe to within 30-28 at the break. It was a slow start to the second half for both teams, combining for just six points in the opening five-plus minutes. Coe managed to grab control momentarily before the nine-minute mark, using a 13-6 run to take a 45-41 lead with 9:41 to play. NWU remained calm and quickly answered, ripping off a 21-6 spurt before the four-minute mark to take a 62-51 lead. The run was fueled by four 3s including back-to-back-to-back triples which propelled the hosts to victory.
