ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College baseball team dropped its 2024 season opener on Saturday afternoon at WashU, falling 10-1 to the Bears in nine innings. WashU jumped on the board immediately in the victory, pushing six runs across in the opening frame. The Bears racked up three hits in the inning and capitalized on three free passes to grab an early lead. The hosts would add to their lead in the third and fourth innings, scoring four more runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead. The Kohawks managed to snag a run back late in the contest, scoring once in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Thoreson but WashU limited the visitors to just two total hits and four base runners.
Mitchell Eckardt and
Kaden Haller were the lone two Kohawks to record hits in the game, each tallying singles in the defeat.

- WashU jumped ahead in its first chance at the plate, getting the leadoff runner on to start the game on a dropped third strike. Back-to-back walks gave the Bears bases loaded which the hosts cashed in on, getting a two-run single from their cleanup hitter. The third run of the inning scored two batters later on another single through the left side. The fourth and fifth runs for WashU were gifts from Coe, handing its opponent a pair of runs on a wild pitch and passed ball. The final run came home with two outs on an RBI double to left as the Bears took a 6-0 lead after one full inning. Eckardt led the following inning of with a single to left but was stranded as Coe went 1-2-3 following the knock. WashU got a solo tally in the bottom of the third, using back-to-back singles to set the stage. The Bears made it 7-0 moments later, utilizing a double steal to extend the lead. The hosts got their final runs of the game in the fourth, getting a two-run homer early in the frame before an RBI single with one out. The Kohawks scored their lone run in the top of the eighth as Creighton Kreshel and Kaden Haller reached to begin the inning. Thoreson drove home Kreshel a few batters later on a productive out, picking up his first RBI of the year on a fly out to left.
Up next: The Kohawks conclude their opening weekend series tomorrow, Sunday, February 25 with a doubleheader against WashU at 11 AM and 2 PM.
