CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis team took one of two matches on Saturday at Clark Racquet Center, defeating Augustana 5-4 before falling 8-1 to Division I opponent Western Illinois. The Kohawks battled in the opening match of the day, seeing Augie take a 2-1 lead after singles play. Coe's point came from the doubles team of
Claudia Bilkey and
Jaden Fuqua, securing a crucial 8-5 win at number three. The Kohawks went on to control much of singles play, winning all but two matches to ensure the overall victory.
Maddie Schultz, Sophia Fain, Alliandra Hagness and
Carlie Miller each won their singles contests, securing the necessary four points to push the Kohawks over the line. Schultz continued her supremacy at number one, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 victory while Fain eeked out a 7-6, 7-5 win at number three. Hagness and Miller each dominated at number four and number six respectively, winning 6-0, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-3. The Kohawks faced some solid competition in their final match of the day, taking on the Division I Leathernecks to close out play. Coe fought hard but only picked up one point in the match, claiming a singles win a number six as Fuqua secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Up next: The Kohawks head to Hilton Head Island for their Spring Break trip next week, competing in the Spring Tennis Fest where they'll play five matches from March 9-13.
