CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team picked up a 79-69 victory over Wartburg College Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks and Knights battled from the opening whistle, trading runs throughout the first period. The hosts led 40-32 after the opening half, shooting 48 percent from the floor while going 6-of-14 from deep. Wartburg fired back in the second period, ripping off an 8-0 spurt early in the frame to tie the score at 47. Coe regained control with 10 straight points in the next phase, getting a pair of 3s from
Zach Strauss and two buckets from
Deuce Walters to reclaim a 57-47 lead. The Kohawks and Knights went toe-to-toe over the closing 10 minutes of the game with Wartburg getting to within five with 2:50 to play but a game-ending 10-5 run for the Kohawks sealed the victory.
Bennett Sherry and
Cole Hrubes paced the offensive effort for the Kohawks, scoring 22 and 19 points respectively while Walters added 12 off the bench. Sherry registered his third double-double in four games adding 10 rebounds in the victory.

- It was back-and-forth in the opening four minutes with the teams trading buckets early on. Coe put together the game's first run over the following phase of play, outscoring Wartburg 14-7 to take a 21-15 lead with 10:48 left in the half. Walters spearheaded the run for the Kohawks, scoring six points as he knocked down a pair of triples. Wartburg slowed the run momentarily and made it a one-point game, scoring five unanswered points to make it 21-20. The Kohawks regained momentum with a quick-striking 11-0 run, pushing the lead to double-digits at 32-20. Both teams settled in for the final six-plus minutes of the first half but Wartburg pulled closer before the end of the half, scoring six of the final eight points to make it 40-32. The Knights put together a big run early in the second half, leveling the game at 47 with eight unanswered points. Coe reclaimed control of the contest over the next three minutes, scoring 10 straight. Walters started the run with a tough finish before back-to-back 3s from Strauss. Walters finished the run with another layin, making it 57-47 with 10:24 remaining. The Knights slowly chipped away, scoring 11 of the next 16 points to pull within four at 62-58. Sherry helped seal the win over the next 4:24, scoring six points during an 11-6 run for the Kohawks. The run put the hosts up 73-64 with 1:43, providing enough of a gap to secure the win.
