Women’s Basketball pushes no. 12 Wartburg to final seconds in midweek A-R-C matchup

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team pushed nationally-ranked Wartburg College to the final seconds Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena but ultimately fell short, falling 55-49 to the no. 12 Knights. Coe and Wartburg traded big runs in the opening two quarters but the Knights ended the first half with 13 unanswered points to take a 30-23 lead. Wartburg extended the lead to 12 midway through the final quarter but Coe refused to give in, scoring eight straight to make it a four-point game. The Kohawks pulled to within three moments later on a long-distance jumper from Taryn Kravig and free throws from Taylor Brunson. Wartburg found the dagger on the following possession, taking most of the shot clock before extending the lead back to six with a long-distance jumper. Kravig led the team with 14 points, a new career high as the sophomore was 6-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-2 from deep. Caydee Kirkham was the other Kohawk in double-figures, scoring 11 points while adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

  • The visitors controlled much of the opening quarter, edging Coe 9-5 over the first six-plus minutes. Both teams struggled early on but find the mark in the closing minutes of the period, combining for 12 points in the final 1:44. Kravig helped Coe edge Wartburg 7-5 during the stretch, hitting a 3 and a jumper as time expired to pull the Kohawks within two at 14-12. The Kohawks stayed hot in the second quarter, scoring 11 of the first 14 points in the period to take a 23-17 lead. Four players scored during the run, led by Ellie Wisner who scored four points. Wartburg regained control before the end of the period, ripping off a 13-0 run in the final 4:26 to take a 30-23 lead into the break. The third quarter was sloppy for both teams, combining for just 16 points in the period. Wartburg managed to stretch the lead despite the offensive struggles, pushing the score to 40-29 with a key 3 in the final minute. Coe slowly clawed back into the game, making it a seven-point game after a Kelly Knight 3 with 6:57 to play. The final Kohawk run came midway through the quarter, ripping off a 13-4 run that was capped by Brunson's free throws. Wartburg handled the pressure and got an open 3 on the following possession, knocking down the shot which was the ultimate difference maker.
