Volleyball sweeps Loras behind Hansel's 14 kill performance

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College volleyball team won its third straight match Wednesday evening, sweeping the Loras College Duhawks 3-0 in a dominant performance at Kohawk Arena. Coe's first A-R-C home match featured a dominant opening set from Coe, hitting .333 with 15 kills en route to a 25-20 decision. The Kohawks followed with another impressive display, winning the second period 25-17 as the defense limited Loras to 10 kills and five attacking errors. Coe capped off the match with a 25-21 win in set three, building an early lead before cruising to the finish line. Kelsey Hansel bolstered the Kohawk attack with a team-high 14 kills as the senior hit .393 and added eight digs defensively. Maddy Maahs had 32 assists in the three-set victory, adding 11 digs for the double-double and three kills on the attack. Bella Rio racked up a team-leading 14 digs and was joined by Maahs and Elise Blaesing in double-digits.

  • Loras built a solid lead early in the first set, taking an 11-8 advantage after a three-point stretch. Coe responded after a timeout, scoring six consecutive to flip the score in its favor at 15-12. Loras continued to fight during the next phase, staying locked with Coe at 18-18. A dominant closing stretch for the hosts gave Coe a 1-0 lead, scoring five of the final six points to go up 1-0. Coe took the early lead in the second set, grabbing a 12-8 advantage with a four-point string. Another four-point run for the Kohawks gave them a 16-10 lead, big enough to hold on for a 2-0 lead as Loras was on the ropes. Coe raced out to a 10-5 lead in the final set but a five-point swing for the visitors tied it at 10. The Kohawks slowly rebuilt their lead, scoring six of the next eight points to go up 16-12. The hosts continued to stretch the lead before the end of the match, making it 22-15 before a handful of subs came in to see out the match.
