Four Kohawks hit double-figures as Men’s Basketball wins at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. — The Coe College men's basketball team won its second straight road contest Tuesday evening at Westminster College, defeating the host Blue Jays 73-60. The Kohawks raced out to an early lead, scoring the game's first nine points in the opening three-plus minutes. Westminster got back into the game with a 13-0 run, making it a contest around the 12-minute mark. Coe controlled the final minutes of the half, outscoring Westminster 23-13 as Cole Hrubes scored nine points down the stretch to give his team a 32-26 lead at the break. A 5-0 run from Coe extended the lead to double-digits at the beginning of the second half. The Blue Jays momentarily slowed the skid with a 5-2 spurt but the Kohawks pushed the lead to 18 with a 14-4 run before the 13-minute mark. Westminster made one last push before the midway mark of the half, pulling within 11 at 58-47 with a quick run. The Kohawk offense settled in for the remainder of the game, hitting five of their final eight field goals to ice the game. Deuce Walters (13), Jackson Bowman (12), Hrubes (11) and Cooper Nailor (11) were Coe's double-digit scorers while Kanyon Bryte (8), Aaron Foote (8) and C. Reece Breitenbach (7) rounded out the balanced effort from the offense.

  • The Kohawks ripped off a dominant start, scoring nine unanswered points in the opening 3-plus minutes. Westminster responded with a scoring streak of its own, scoring 13 consecutive as the Blue Jays hit 5-of-7 field goals during the run to make it 13-9. Coe returned to supremacy over the next 5:53 of game action, scoring 11 of the next 14 points as Hrubes and Breitenbach combined for 10 points to put Coe back in front. The teams traded blows in the remaining moments of the first half but a slight 12-10 meant that the Kohawks led 32-26 at the break. Coe slowly extended the lead early in the second half, outscoring Westminster 15-7 as Breitenbach and Bowman capped the spurt with back-to-back 3s. Ryan Dolphin and Walters hit back-to-back 3s minutes later, extending Coe's lead to 18 at 53-35 with 13:08 to play. Westminster refused to go away despite the large deficit, getting within 11 points near the 10-minute mark but Coe handled the pressure and maintained offensive efficiency en route to the victory.
