MEQUON, Wisc. – The Coe College football team opened the NCAA DIII Playoffs with a first-round victory Saturday afternoon at Concordia Wisconsin, defeating the Falcons 44-7 for the Kohawks first playoff win since 2016. Coe scored the first 14 points of the game, getting a 12-yard passing touchdown from
Brady Kelly to
Devon Kollasch in the first quarter before a two-yard score from
Quincy Drummer early in the second quarter. CUW responded with its own rushing touchdown just before the two-minute timeout but a clutch 32-yard field goal from
Jake Collett gave the Kohawks a two-possession lead at the half. Coe, which won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half, immediately extended the lead in the third quarter with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard receiving touchdown for
Jeron Senters. The score came on a crucial fourth down play for the Kohawks as Senters got the eight he needed prior to juking a number of Falcon defenders en route to the end zone. Coe's defense helped put the game on ice in the remaining minutes of the third and fourth quarter with
Jack Clarahan forcing and recovering a fumble near midfield on the ensuing possession.
Tre'sean Cunningham made it 30-7 five minutes later, cashing in from two-yards as the offense capitalized on another Falcon turnover. Coe got the ball back quickly after another quick possession for the hosts and put the game on ice as Cunningham found the end zone again, this time with a 35-yard rush down the gut of the Falcon defense. A strip sack in the end zone ended the fun for the Kohawks with around four minutes to play as
Stone Cummins forced a fumble that
Brant Tedrow plopped on for the final score of the game. Kelly was nearly perfect in the pass game, going 22-of-25 for 267 yards and two scores while Cunningham (84 yards, 2 TDs) and Drummer (70 yards, 1 TD) combined for 154 yards and three scores.
Jeron Senters led the receiving efforts with 97 yards on six catches and Drummer added 85 with six grabs.
Devon Kollasch caught a team-high seven passes for 81 yards and found the end zone one time. Defensively,
Henry Ryan had a team-high nine tackles, followed by
Noah Tolbert and
Jack Clarahan who posted eight each.
Leighton Charters and
Kyle Kingsbury secured Coe's interceptions on the afternoon while Clarahan and Cummins forced fumbles.
GAME FACTS
COE 44 - CONCORDIA 7
- Concordia moved the ball well on the opening drive of the game, picking up four first downs to set up a red zone opportunity. Charters made a huge play as the Falcons tried to pick up an opening score through the air, stepping in front of the intended receiver to corral the interception and set up Coe at its 20. The Kohawks struck quickly, finding the end zone seven plays later as Kelly found Kollasch for the score. The Falcons again moved it well on the second drive, holding possession in Coe territory as the second quarter began. CUW went for it on fourth-and-six from Coe's 34 but failed to convert as the defense came up with another huge play. Another quick-strike from the offense made it 14-0 as they rode the backs of Drummer on the scoring drive. The Texas native touched the ball on all six plays, beginning with a 31-yard catch before capping it with a two-yard scoring plunge. Concordia Wisconsin wouldn't go down without a fight, halving the deficit late in the quarter with a drive that only featured the run. Coe quickly moved it into scoring territory before the end of the half and turned to the junior Collett for the 32-yard try which split the uprights as time expired in the second quarter. The Kohawks started pulling away in the third quarter, opening the frame with an 11-play 65-yard score that was capped with Kelly's second score of the day to Senters. Clarahan's forced fumble set up Coe at midfield one possession later, giving Cunningham and the offense the chance to put the game on ice. Coe rode the back of the two Texas ball carries and ended it with a two-yard score for Cunningham as Coe went up 30-7. The Kohawks final offensive touchdown came early in the fourth quarter as Cunninham broke a 35-yard score to put the exclamation point on the victory. Coe's defense got in on the scoring before the end of the game, getting a sack fumble in CUW's endzone as Tedrow ended the scoring at 44-7.
