Men’s Basketball handles Cornell in 2025-26 home opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College men's basketball team made it five straight wins to start the 2025-26 season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cornell College Rams 82-62 in its home opener. The Kohawks started the game well, taking an early 12-7 lead after five early points from Deuce Walters. Coe's lead continued to grow in the first half, pushing the lead to nine with a 3 from Zach Strauss making it 27-18 with 5:37 left in the period. The Kohawks made it 18 with a big push before the final whistle but Cornell hung around with five in a row to make it 42-29 at the break. Coe put the game away in the first stretch of the second half, outscoring Cornell 20-8 before the midway mark. Coe's second unit handled business in the final minutes, keeping Cornell at a comfortable distance en route to the victory. Jackson Bowman led Coe's offensive attack with 16 points and was one rebounds shy of a double-double, pulling down nine. Walters added 12 points and was joined in double-figures by Aleks Jajic with 10 points. Cooper Nailor had a team-high eight assists in the win while Ryan Dolphin was close behind with five.

  • An early 12-7 run gave Coe the advantage as Walters led the charge with five early on. The lead continued to grow with Coe slowly pushing the advantage to nine as Strauss cashed in a 3 to give the Kohawks their largest lead at 27-18. The Kohawks made it an 18-point game with another big scoring stretch, ripping off a 15-6 run that was capped off with an alley-oop from Nailor to Bowman. Cornell managed to get back into touching distance with a five-point string to end the half as Coe led 42-29. The Kohawks put the game away early in the second half, scoring 14 of the opening 19 to go up 22. Back-to-back 3s from Strauss and Jajic made it a 25-point game with 11 to play, a large enough lead for Coe's second unit to see out.
