Late run falls short as Women’s Basketball drops non-conference matchup with #3/4 UW-Oshkosh

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wisc. — The Coe College women's basketball team battled with no. 3/4 UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon, falling to the undefeated Titans 53-46 in the opening game of the Justagame DIII Invitational. The Kohawks started well, opening up with seven of the first 10 points in the first four-plus minutes. Oshkosh controlled the rest of the first two quarters, outscoring Coe 29-15 during the stretch to establish a double-digit lead at the halftime break. The Kohawks hung tough, cutting the deficit to six with 2:05 left in the third quarter but a late 3 from the Titans made it a 41-32 contest ahead of the fourth. Audrie Helmrichs powered a 12-5 run during the fourth quarter as Coe pulled within five points of the Titan lead but there was just 25 seconds left of the game clock, allowing UW-Oshkosh to hang on for the victory. Helmrichs was a dominant force throughout the entire game, totaling 23 points and 12 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double. Taryn Kravig was Coe's other top scorer, finishing with nine boards while adding six assists.

  • The Kohawks scored the first field goal of the game as Kravig knocked down a 3, setting the stage for the early 7-3 spurt. Oshkosh closed the quarter in dominant fashion, scoring 12 unanswered points to lead 15-7 after one. Coe and UWO went back and forth in the second quarter trading blows throughout with a pair of 3s from Kravig helping the Kohawk offense stay in touch. Oshkosh pulled away to make it 32-18 with 1:27 to play in the half but a 4-0 run for Coe in the closing minute cut the deficit to 10 at 32-22. It was more tightly contested action in the third with the teams separated by just a point. The Kohawks looked to make a run, cutting it to a six-point deficit at 38-32 but a 3 from Oshkosh made it 41-32 to end the third. The titans hit another 3 to start the fourth, looking to end Coe's chances but the Kohawks kept fighting. Coe scored 12 of the next 17 points to close the gap to five but Caydee Kirhkham's layup to make it 49-44 came with just 25 seconds to play. Oshkosh sealed the victory at the free throw line, converting two perfect trips to the stripe to hang on.
