CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team fell just short Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, falling 78-75 to the University of Dubuque Spartans. The game was full of runs for both teams but the Kohawks managed to use a late surge in the first half to take a 38-31 lead into the break. UD fought back in the second half, erasing a double-digit deficit with a 12-0 run to grab a 47-46 lead. Dubuque pulled away later in the period, doubling up the Kohawks with a 12-6 run to make it 71-64 with less than two minutes remaining. The hosts refused to go away, getting within 3 points on a
Cooper Nailor 3 with a second left on the clock. A misplayed inbounds pass fell to Nailor on the ensuing possession but his potential game-tying shot rimmed out as UD hung on. Nailor led the team with 25 points on the night, adding four rebounds, two assists and one steal while shooting 10-of-16 from the floor.
Deuce Walters (11),
Jackson Bowman (11) and
Bennett Sherry (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring while
John Steffen pulled down a team-high 10 boards with eight points.

- UD dominated the opening three minutes and change, scoring 10 of the first 12 points while hitting all three of its field goal tries. The Kohawks quickly answered in a stretch that lasted less than two minutes, ripping off a 9-3 run that was fueled by six points from Nailor. The game of runs continued as UD controlled the next few minutes, using a 7-2 run to regain a multiple possession advantage at 20-13. Coe responded yet again, putting together a strong five-minute spell. The hosts outscored UD 12-2 on the run, holding the Spartans to just 1-of-10 shooting. The run was capped by five unanswered points from Walters, hitting a 3 and a turnaround jumper to make it 25-22 with 7:00 left in the half. The Kohawks continued to surge over the closing moments of the first, outscoring UD 13-9 in the final 6:15 to lead 38-31 after 20 minutes. The Kohawks built the lead in the opening possessions of the second half, using an 8-4 run to push the advantage to 46-35 less than four minutes in. The Spartans regained momentum over the next three-plus minutes, scoring 12 unanswered points to flip the score to 47-46. The Kohawks narrowly outscored the visitors in the following phase of the game, pulling back ahead 57-55 with an 11-8 spurt. UD took control of the game for good with a 7-1 outburst, regaining a multiple possession lead with just over six minutes remaining. Coe pulled it back to a one-possession game late in the half, getting back-to-back buckets from Nailor and Bowman to make it 71-68. Nailor made it a three point game again in the dying moments, connecting on a last-ditch 3 with one second to play. An errant inbound pass gave Nailor one final heave but his shot rimmed out as UD hung on for the victory.
