WAVERLY, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team battled hard in its regular season finale but ultimately came up short Saturday afternoon, falling 72-58 to no. 13 Wartburg College. The Kohawks, missing two starters due to illness, pushed the Knights in the opening half, outscoring the hosts 16-15 in the first quarter while staying in touch before the halftime break. Wartburg put together a strong third period, edging Coe 22-14 to take a double-digit lead before the final quarter. The Kohawks cut the lead to single digits early in the fourth but Wartburg saw out the remainder of the game, keeping the visitors at a comfortable distance throughout.
Caydee Kirkham led a trio of double-digit scorers for Coe, finishing with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Ellie Wisner and
Kelly Knight played supporting roles for the offense, posting 16 and 10 points respectively. Coe's shooting struggles were the decisive differences between the squads with the Kohawks shooting 36 percent and the Knights hitting 50 percent of their tries. The Kohawks, who secured the second seed in next week's A-R-C tournament on Wednesday evening, will rest in the opening round and face the winner of no. 3 Simpson and no. 6 Central on Thursday, January 27 at Kohawk Arena.

- Wartburg opened in dominant fashion, scoring nine of the first 12 points to an early 9-3 lead. The Kohawks fought back before the end of the frame, outscoring the hosts 13-6 in the final five minutes. Wisner, Taryn Kravig and Kirkham all hit 3s during the run, giving Coe a 16-15 advantage after one quarter. The Kohawks continued to surge in the early minutes of the second quarter, outscoring Wartburg 10-4 in the opening phase as Kirkham poured in five points during the run. The Knights snapped back in the final half of the frame, ripping off a 17-7 run to close the half with a 36-33 lead. Coe got back-to-back 3s from Kravig and Wisner to claim early momentum in the third quarter but Wartburg answered, outscoring Coe 22-8 in the final eight-plus minutes to regain control. Coe sliced the deficit to nine to begin the frame but Wartburg saw out the final minutes of regulation, edging Coe 14-9 to win by double-digits.
